A few months ago, I wrote about some of my fears and I can add another one to the list: being trapped inside a tiny submarine.
Are you familiar with the story?
I wasn't too intrigued but then I started digging into it yesterday and it definitely has my interest now.
Here's a summary of what is going on:
  • Five people have gone missing in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
  • They were on an expedition to the wreck of the Titanic about 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland.
  • The expedition was being done in a custom-built 22-foot carbon fiber submarine called the Titan that can go down super deep into the ocean.
  • A typical nuclear submarine has to go down about 3,000 feet but the Titan was going to go down 13,000 feet.
  • The company that made the Titan is called OceanGate and they charge people $250,000 to do a three-day expedition to see the Titanic wreck.
  • It's all fun and games until the submarine goes missing.
  • There are currently a few theories on what happened to the Titan: 1) They are stuck 13,000 feet underwater and the deepset submarine rescue in history was 1,500 feet. 2) The Titan wasn't as well built as advertised and it literally just imploded. 3) The last and most hopeful scenario is that the Titan is stuck above water somewhere but you can't open it from the inside so they are still stuck inside the submarine.
  • The U.S. and Canadian coast guards are currently searching the area with aircraft, boats and sonar.
  • Based on what I read and listened to yesterday, they have about 20 or so hours of oxygen left.

This is a pretty fluid situation so by the time you read this, there could be a conclusion to the story.
What do you think is going to happen?

Happy Wednesday and I will talk to you tomorrow.

I will persevere.
I will keep moving forward.
I will be the stream.

P.S. Thank you for your support yesterday. You are the best.

  1. If it's concluded, I'm not yet aware of it. Time is ticking and it doesn't look positive. I'd rather hurtle through the air in a tube than go underwater in one.

It took 73 years to find the Titanic.

    1. Not very reassuring, Jimmy. Good to hear from you.

  3. I am crazy afraid of drowning, so I really can't even read about this for long without feeling panicky. I think the waiting time would be the worst inside that tube. I read that when the carbon dioxide levels get to a certain level they will simply lose consciousness. So it would be the mental stress beforehand that would be unbearable. Not a trip I'd try. Nope nope nope

    1. I am a nope, nope, nope as well, jenny_o. I think the chance of them finding survivors is not great.

  4. A fluid situation? I might steal that. You forgot the part about this submersible being steered, and controlled by a video game controller. I'm betting that 12 years from now a shirt will wash up on an island in the Indian Ocean.

    1. Glad someone noticed that, Dave. It is bonkers about the video game controller.

  5. They bought the lights from Camping World and the controls are from a gaming platform. What could possibly go wrong.

  6. I heard today that they give them a 1% chance of rescue. I cannot imagine anything more terrifying than being trapped in a tiny sub, locked in from the outside, waiting to run out of air. We can hope for a miracle, but I can't see it happening. Of course, I didn't hear the sub might be floating on top of the water, but they can't get out. Gads. They sign a multipage release that mentions death on the first page like half a dozen times.

  7. And the head guy is (was?) from Seattle. The company is headquartered in Everett. I am embarrassed for my state. The mockery of safety regulations, the amount of effort and money spent on trying to rescue them (a futile endeavor in my opinion) and the idea of being that far below the surface under that kind of pressure--I feel a mix of anger and sadness. There is no amount of money you could pay me to go on a submersible, especially to that depth.

  8. When I first heard the news I thought "what the hel were they thinking going down so deep in such a small sub?" then I thought they were stupid not having extra oxygen tanks, not enough space for all the passengers and no rescue plan in place before they even began descending. I think they are going to die.

  9. One trip I would not have gone on. I won't even go on a cruise!
