I do have a deep affinity for Millard Fillmore and his work to prevent the Northern Whigs, who opposed the Fugitive Slave Law, from winning elections and using his patronage powers to appoint pro-Fugitive Slave Law political allies to federal office.
Plus it is fun to say Millard.
Or Fillmore.
And saying them together is magical.
But you know that the MF is Miss Frizzle.

I have always been a big fan of dogs and grew up with a few mutts before my family was introduced to a four-legged slobber machine known as a basset hound, and it was love at first sight.
The first basset love was a girl named Henry when I was about 10.
Then we had Higgins (named after the Magnum P.I. character) the basset hound through my high school and college years.
After college, Mrs. Shife and I found a rescue that we named Quincy and he was a quirky, stubborn boy but we loved him unconditionally.
We also like to think that he helped us prepare for parenthood in his own special way.
Then came along another basset rescue named Tank.
He looked like a supermodel but he got the short end of the stick when it came to brains.
We tried to be his forever home but it just didn't work out as he needed a home without kids.
Then came along the yellow lab, Ms. Frizzle.
I never thought in 100 dog years that I'd become so smitten with a Labrador retriever but she's the best.
Maybe it is because she is a great family dog, maybe it is because she has taught me a lot about living in the moment or maybe it is because she is what we needed when we needed it.
I am in love with a girl named Ms. Frizzle and I just felt like telling you all about it.

Wrapping up her yoga session with a downward dog pose.

Doing all that yoga allows her to have extra snacks.

One of her favorite chores is keeping the floors moisturized. She achieved epic drool status on this day.

Another favorite activity of hers is being a floor anchor to make sure the area rug isn't relocated.

Thanks for stopping by.
Hope you are having a good week.
And thank you all for the wonderful birthday wishes.
It was wonderful hearing from all of you and helped make my special day even more special.
Talk to you soon.

I will persevere.
I will keep moving forward.
I will be the stream.

  1. Millard Fillmore was going to be my choice too even before I got to the end of the list and saw you liked that as a choice as well. If I ever have another child, and my wife is beyond productive years, I will name them Millard Fillmore, girl or boy.

  2. Sounds like Ms. Frizzle earns her keep and then some. Those darn relocating area rugs - they're so tricky!! It's good for kids to grow up with a pet and experience that special companionship.

  4. Millard Fillmore sounds a lot like a bartender I used to know. It's also nice to know you had a Henry & Higgins, shame there wasn't a My Fair Lady link. And I thought you knew; dogs are the perfect two-year-old children who can be pesty but never really terrible.

  8. Someone in our old neighborhood had a Bassett hound and I was in love with that dog. I could only handle an easy going dog. My grandma had a daschund named Buffy when I was little and I have loved wiener dogs since (though I realize some are not easy going). Never a dog owner, just an admirer. Quincy is a great name! But so is MF!

  9. So glad you dropped Basset for Yellow Lab. Yellow is synonymous with mellow; basset goes with nothing.

  10. Love!
This is the best post I've seen about a pet by a pet parent. Mrs. Frizzle sounds like a super cool doggie. I've never been a pet person (ironically, I've lived with someone who loves dogs -and has two- for YEARS!) but I can understand why people are crazy about them.
And when I read MF I immediately thought about Prince's 'Sexy MF' because I had just listened to it in the car. But Millard Fillmore sounds just as good.

    XOXO

  12. You had a lot of great dogs! I think Labs are one of the best! That picture with her drool looks like she's holding a necklace asking you to put it on her!

  13. I really think labs and goldens are the best family dogs. Our last dog was a golden retriever. I sometimes think about getting a dog but my cat wouldn't appreciate it. Plus, with only one person, a more dependent pet would be a lot of work.

    1. You could always be a dog sitter to scratch that itch, Margaret, but I don't think Mari would like that either.

  15. I'm glad Ms Fizzle brings you so much joy. Our 2 cats died quite a few years ago but I still miss them.

  16. Well having Labs I am prejudice. I LOVE labs and goldens. You know I lost my 13 yr old lab this February and it is still such a huge loss. I swear she was a little person who just couldn't talk, she sure could communicate with us in her way as I am certain Ms. Fizzle does. I feel once you've had a Lab you'll never go back. Best family dogs ever!! Hell, let's be honest, best dog ever. 😊🐕‍🦺

  19. Ms. Frizzle is adorable. I love the names you've had for the dogs. Falcor is the first dog I've had as an adult. We had a dog when I was a kid but he died when I was 10 so I really didn't have anything to do with taking care of him.
