Snow Days

Hello, you!
How are things?
The Shifleys are doing pretty good.
Thanks for asking.
We had a long weekend and got out of town to help us get recharged and rejuvenated.
We went up north about an hour to Idaho City to go sledding at a place called Steamboat Gulch and then rewarded ourselves by soaking in the hot springs.
We couldn't have asked for a better day as the sun was out and there was lots of blue skies.
Mother Nature is pretty awesome.
I have even have pictures to prove it.

Kyle and Hayden, sledding superstars

Kyle getting some air

Hayden shredding snow

And the hot springs

And a funny story from our Idaho City adventures.
It was a scene straight out of America's Funniest Videos.
A man was trying to take a picture of his kid at the bottom of the sled hill so he had has back facing the oncoming sledders.
Can you guess what happened?
A giant unicorn floatie manned by two girls ran him over and he ate all of the shit.

It was so funny.
I felt a little guilty about laughing at his expense but I got over it.
I was also feeling ornery this day and asked him later if he got the name of the unicorn that ran him over.
I don't know if he was amused by my comment but I was grateful witnessing his sledding fail as another man's misfortune is another man's blog content.

Freedom

  • No naps for almost 2 weeks. Kinda of a big deal because I was napping daily on a regular basis for over 6 months. A combo of not sleeping well at night and long COVID (chronic fatigue syndrome) but I have been sleeping a lot better at night and I think acupuncture treatments have helped out.
  • No Facebook for well over a month. It is not good for my mental health and I finally said bye.
  • Still on a beer break. I haven't had one since New Year's Eve and my body appears to be much happier with that decision. It is not hurting that I am enjoying bourbon - in moderation.

Meme dump

I am better than I was. I will be better than I am.
I will persevere. I will keep moving forward. I will be the stream.

  1. Sorry about the Long Covid. People really don't even think about that. Really.
And I recently went to the Chena Hot Springs in Alaska and I'm a new man now. What an experience!
I kind of cackled at your anecdote. And at that meme of the gymnast. Because that'd be me.

    XOXO

    1. Yes it is a bummer. Mrs. Shife has been dealing with lack of smell and taste for well over a year. It comes and goes and is so frustrating. I am hopeful I am over the hump with mine. Hot springs in Alaska sounds pretty amazing, Sixpence. Glad you got to experience it.

  2. I didn't know that you had long Covid! Several younger former students and friends have it; they got the virus in the early days of the pandemic in NYC and a year later were still having nasty effects from it. I'm glad that yours is improving. That video, my oh my! Amazing. Who captured the event anyway? I do like bourbon but not as much as an occasional beer. I'll have to put up with its aftereffects I guess. ;)

    1. Yep me and my lovely wife both have had long-term effects. She is dealing with lack of smell and taste. It is no bueno.

  3. That looks like so much fun! It’s been a long time since I’ve been sledding. Is it refreshing to go in the hot springs when it’s so cold out? Glad you are feeling better.

    1. It is pretty awesome, Bijoux. Now getting out after soaking for an hour is not as much fun.

  4. I think the Olympian should have gotten an automatic 10.0.

  5. Does anyone use those old fashioned sled with cast iron runners polished to a chrome finish on the bottom and the wooden slats? I would and impress the hell out of everyone.

All I could think about the unicorn story was the Seinfeld episode that contained the line, "It was a one in a million shot Doc." It could have been much worse.

    1. Do they even sell those anymore, Ed? I wonder if they went the way of the lawn darts with the steel tips and were deemed too dangerous.

  6. Looks like a fun getaway and after a long day of sledding soaking in a hot spring would be the best.
Who am i kidding, after a long day of watching a runway unicorn take a man down, soaking in a hot spring would be the best.

  7. No naps! Ahhhh. the dogs would kill me! And that giant unicorn floaty? If you hadn't posted a pic, I suspect that was the bourbon talking.

    1. It is not something you expect to see at a sledding hill but there it was.

  8. I'd skip the sledding part and head straight for the hot springs. I'm sorry you've been suffering with long Covid, hopefully you've turned the corner. Such a horrible virus.

  10. Spreading butter on cold toast is mighty good.
I'm rooting for staying off FB and B. That's good for you, too.
Help you get over long C, I hope!

  11. The sledding day looks fun, especially when followed by the soak in the hot springs. You got some great pictures. OMG that man could have been seriously hurt, looks like he landed pretty hard. He must be younger than me; doubt I would have been able to walk away afterwards. But, right you are he's misfortunate (caused perhaps by a bad decision to turn his back...just saying), is good for your blog content. Glad you're feeling better and sleeping better, does that mean you're officially over Long Haul Covid? Giving up beer for bourbon sounds like a good idea to me. We sipped some Angles Envy the other night........soooooooo smooth. I still like visiting with large numbers of people on facebook, but have trimmed some of the toxic people from my friends list.
