Ramble On

Things have been a little off this week so that is why I am posting later than usual.
First, I just got back from being in Las Vegas for 5 days for a softball tournament.
It was fine but my plantar fasciitis flared up and I was in a lot of pain.
I love playing softball but it is hard to play when you want to cry every time you take a step.
It had been bothering me for a few weeks and the foot doctor put me on prednisone to help with the inflammation.
That didn't work.
The only thing that did happen was I got a nice bout of insomnia.
According to my sleeping app, I got about 6 hours of sleep while I was away.
I am not good at math but 6 goes into 5 equals...

Being tired and in discomfort is not a fun way to spend your days.
Besides that, the tournament went well.
We won more than we lost but we didn't win enough.
Maybe next year.
It was good to come home though because I really missed the family.
Remember when I said I was happily domesticated, well this trip really reinforced that.
Home is where the heart is.
I went to see the foot doctor again to see what the next steps were since the prednisone didn't work.
And it was getting a cortisone shot in my heel.
I had to get one about 10 years ago and it ranks right near the top for most painful experiences.

They have to spread the cortisone around so they jab the needle in and out of your heel.
Basically the doctor is stabbing you in the heel with a long needle.
For several minutes.
You are sober.
And you want to cry.
A lot.
Good times.
Fortunately, I went to new foot doctor that didn't graduate from an S & M academy.
He actually used an ultrasound to locate the inflammation and only had to put the needle in one spot.
The prednisone finally worn off and I actually slept more than 3 hours last night.
Things are looking up.
I also think I am going to start posting on Thursdays now that my softball season is over.
I have more free time and updating on Tuesday didn't always work with my schedule.
I also want to spend some time getting my taxidermied squirrel site up and running on Etsy.

Sorry for the rambling post but congrats if you made it this far.
Hope your week is going well.
Thanks for stopping by and I will talk to you soon.

I am better than I was. I will be better than I am.
I will persevere. I will keep moving forward. I will be the stream.

  1. First off, ouch! The foot pain is bad enough but the needle bit was killing me.

I'm wondering if insomnia isn't a good thing in Vegas because the city never sleeps??

Whenever we go away, no matter the reason, I start the countdown as to when we'll be home, subtracting sleeping hours and such. I love getting away, but I so love coming home!

  2. It would probably take more than one doctor to hold me down while they stabbed the bottom of my feet with a needle multiple times. I'm guessing at least six big ones.

    1. I will take that off your Amazon wish list, Ed.

  3. I had a horrible reaction to a prednisone taper. The only time my husband threatened to leave me, since I was throwing Calphalon pans at him. It made me crazy!

I've also had Lidocaine injections for a hip injury. It took three times to hit the spot. But the doctor was so gorgeous I didn't mind much. *grins*

For some reason,...I thought softball was a girl thing.

  4. If you were going to go the S&M route, you should at least get a gal in a latex outfit to do it.

  5. I made it to the end! I guess you are way past wearing a boot at night to stretch those muscles. I had PF twice but thankfully never had to go the needle route. Having a wart frozen is the closest I ever want anyone near my foot. I hope you get some relief soon.

  6. That foot sounds painful. I should be thankful, I only have the issues that I do have.

  7. Oh man, a needle in the heel sounds horrific. But I didn’t know ultrasounds can detect inflammation, so that’s cool. Hope you are pain free soon.

  8. OH those cortizone shots in the heel are the worst. They move that needled around. It's as painful as you describe! I'm sorry you had to go through that. I would have admited to war crimes I never committed to make him stop moving that damn needle. I was shocked at how much that hurt me.
And even though I am in a new dwelling I said that last night to my husband. Home is where you and Izzy are. :-) I get it.

  9. Oh, I have been there and done that with plantar fasciitis. So awful. And it was hard to stay away from racquetball for a good 6 weeks. I did go the shot rout ~ ouchie. I did two of those, and then decided I would not do three. But it did help. Just do the runners stretch every morning, and wear these: Cushioned Plantar Fasciitis Foot Arch Support Sleeves - Soft Foam Compression Pad Pain Relief......on Amazon for less than ten bucks. You can even wear them bare foot. I only wear them when I'm hiking or playing these days, and haven't had any problems for a number of years.
Ok......that squirrel. It's kinda cute, but it'd be cuter if it was alive : D

  10. They gave me prednisone for my back 6 years ago... and all I did was sleep. My body chemistry is odd. My sleeping app came with my Garmin and it is never correct, and it was expensive. And that squirrel is freaking awesome. I have several thousand living around my house so let me know if you want more!

  11. I can commiserate on every jab of pain. Old ladies don't deal with pain any better than young men. At least you didn't need a walker!
    Love to the young ones.

  13. A softball tournament can be a lot of fun... unless you are in severe foot pain and not sleeping! I'm sorry you had to deal with all that and especially when out of town. If you have to be in pain you at least want to be at home and not sleeping in your own bed. I really hope you are feeling better now. You are correct - Home is where the heart is!

Oh, and have fun with that taxidermied squirrel site!

  14. Whoa.
I kept visualizing that Prednisone shot and it was not pretty. The falling down the hill did not sound any better, either.
    Hope you're feeling better, though.
And there's nothing wrong with being happily domesticated. For some, that's goals.

  16. That sounds miserable and then the lack of sleep on top of that! Glad that the new doctor had a better plan for treatment and that you're getting back to normal. Whatever that happens to be! :)

  17. Oh, man. I knew someone with the same foot condition and it is not a joy to have. :(
I'm sure you've tried everything under the sun already, but the dude I knew who had it swore by a type of laser treatment for his plantar fasciitis. Could that be something up your alley?

That squirrel is looking pretty pimp, btw.

    1. Nothing but big pimpin' squirrels in our hood, Bea. Laser treatment wasn't mentioned when I talked to the doctor but I will look into it. Thanks.

  18. It was hard to read about that needle because I had to keep covering my eyes ... ow ow ow.
I'm glad you got a more humane treatment this time around.
I agree about home. I'm a terrible traveller; I'd just rather be here especially if I'm not feeling up to par.
Hope you catch up on your sleep quickly. A bad night makes the next day bad too.

  19. Sorry to hear your foot was giving you pain.

  20. I've had those shots, ouch, I'm not sure the temp relief was worth it since it's rather a band-aide treatment really. But chronic pain is a bitch. I'm with you on there being no place like Home.

I have PF in both heals, as does my son. He's 43 and I'm 76. I self diagnosed around 10 years ago and began using the shoe inserts. The pain I experienced, mostly in the morning, was greatly lessened within 2 days and completely relieved shortly thereafter. My son swears by the Superfeet brand, which cost almost as much as shoes. The half length pads work for me, however. I use them in all shoes and slippers as well and have zero pain, to date. I suppose I treated it early enough that these work well. Stretching excercises and weight control also help, of course. As well as good quality shoes that are retired when too worn.
      Be well, all.
