Let's Go To The Movies

  • I got to check off one of my big Dad to-dos with Kyle and Hayden.
    We watched "The Sandlot."
And it was great to sit down with my kids and enjoy the film with them.
I have always loved this movie.
Probably because it encapsulated a lot of my youth as I spent a lot of my summers playing baseball with my friends.
It feels like it took the essence of what it means to be in your youth, bottled it up, splashed it across screen and said, "Here, you go, amigo. Watch this, and remember your childhood."
  • Kyle and Hayden had two favorite scenes.
The first one is when Squints pretends to drown so that Wendy Peffercorn will save him and he sneaks in a kiss.

  • The next scene that they liked the most was when The Beast chases Benny through town.

  • Did you have a favorite movie that you really wanted to watch with your kids?
  • Speaking of movies, Mrs. Shife and I watched an unexpected surprise on Hulu called
"Palm Springs." The movie is described as: "Stuck in a time loop, two wedding guests develop a budding romance while living the same day over and over again."
It's an updated version of "Groundhog Day."
  • I saw that most of the new movies that got pushed to late 2020 have now been pushed back to 2021. 2020 is the gift that keeps on giving.
Iron Man (2008)
The Incredible Hulk (2008)
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Thor (2011)
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
The Avengers (2012)
Iron Man 3 (2013)
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) <<<<<<< We are here
Ant-Man (2015)
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Doctor Strange (2016)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Black Panther (2018)
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)
Captain Marvel (2019)
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
  • Any new or old movies that you have seen lately that you would recommend?

I will persevere. I will keep moving forward. I will be the stream.

  2. I've never seen The Sandlot. But I'm a huge Marvel fan. I think I've seen all of them, dangit, I'd like to see them all again. But I *love* Guardians of the Galaxy. I think it's the music.

    1. Yes, the music in Guardians is wonderful and definitely makes it even more enjoyable. Kyle's favorite is Dr. Strange and I love Ant Man. Mostly because I love Paul Rudd. Black Panther and Thor Ragnorak are a close second.

  3. That is a very ambitious list of movies to work through, but I think 2020 will accommodate that ...

I couldn't wait for our kids to watch the Pink Panther movies (with Peter Sellers). I think they were about the ages of your kids, or maybe a bit older, when we finally started them. They loved them, which was very satisfying to a parent, as you can imagine :)

    1. It is a great thing when you share something you love with your kiddos and you see them fall in love with it. As Kyle and Hayden are getting older, I am really seeing their love for animals grown by leaps and bounds and it makes me so happy.

  6. Shame on me, I have not yet seen the movie, "Sandlot." But my daughter is my favorite "go to the movies with" girl! She actually likes war movies.

  7. I’m not much of a movie person, but we did enjoy sharing the joy of Ferris Buehler’s Day Off and The Breakfast Club with our kids. Two movies we saw while dating.

  8. The Sandlot! I watched it with grands a century ago. I sat at my youngest grandson's graduation party today and calculated my oldest grandchild is approaching thirty. Shame on that clip for cutting before--seconds before--the autograph was revealed.
I watched some a string of scary movies with my granddaughter a couple of years ago, so she could point out to me the mechanics of a scary movie so they are no longer scary. But I cannot remember what they were.

  9. My husband and I watched 'Palm Springs' as well. It was a sweet flick. The female lead was in probably the best Black Mirror ep. ever called the 'USS Callister'. If you've not yet seen it, then you should check it out.

I recently re-watched a classic and one of my all-time faves recently called 'The Apartment' starring Jack Lemmon, Shirely MacLaine and Fred MacMurray. Heavy yet funny stuff.

    1. I need to re-visit that Black Mirror ep because I don't remember it but I saw them all. Thanks for the recommendation, Bea. I need to watch that movie.

  11. That's great they liked The Sandlot; classics are the best. We had Faith watch Soylent Green recently; probably not recommended for the kids though. I second Bea's recommendation of The Apartment. I've seen so many movies but couldn't even think of one, ha sorry.

    2. You and the wife may enjoy The Old Guard, on Netflix. It's action and it has Charlize Theron, natch.
For the kids, I think you're doing great! I'd encourage both of them to watch the whole Marvel Universe movie. If I had a daughter, I'd watch with her EVERYTHING super heroes (and would sneak in Wonder Woman).
I've heard about Palm Springs. They were talking about it in my fav podcast.

      XOXO

    3. The Old Guard is on the list, Sixpence, so thank you. We just watched Charlize in Longshot with Seth Rogen and it had its moments. Definitely recommend Palm Springs and Hayden and I will be watching all of the superhero movies but she needs to be just a little older.

  14. The Sandlot is great.

That Marvel list looks like so much homework. Quite a nasty syllabus. I'm not big on those movies. I know. Not a popular opinion.

I love that my son loves Transformers The Movie, the cartoon one, from 1986. He blows me away with how much he knows about Transformers. Way more than any 3-year-old. I really could teach him a lot more useful stuff if I had the ambition. But damn, who the hell can name all the Dinobots and Constructicons?

    1. I guess I am not surprised that Erik Noisewater loves the Transformers since I think you suggested that I should name one of kids Starscream.
