Thought of the day

Monday is currently sucking the joy out of my life like the 'Blood Rave' in Blade. I showed up looking for a nice little entry into the workweek, but I ended up in a downpour of urgent requests and broken code. It’s exactly the kind of 'gratuitous horror' I didn’t have on my bingo card today.
It also made me revisit a blog of my past and some of the other movie scenes that can make you squirm in your seat, cover your eyes and yell, "FOR THE LOVE OF THE FATTEST BASSETS, PLEASE MAKE IT STOP."

Here are 10 of the absolute worst—in no particular order—and remember, this is purely from a "dumb, white guy’s" perspective.

Warning: Many of these clips contain extremely gratuitous violence. Watch at your own risk.

  1. American History X – The Curb Stomp: A gruesome, stomach-turning scene where Edward Norton’s character forces a man to bite the curb before stomping him. It’s the sound that stays with you. Watch the Scene

  2. Misery – Hobbling Paul Sheldon: Annie Wilkes taking a sledgehammer to Paul’s ankles is the definition of "cringe-worthy." It’s the ultimate "please look away" moment. Watch the Scene

  3. Casino – The Cornfield Beatdown: Joe Pesci and his brother are getting beaten with baseball bats and buried alive while still breathing. It’s relentless and deeply graphic. Watch the Scene

  4. There’s Something About Mary – The Zipper: Probably the most famous zipper accident in cinematic history. "Frank and beans!" It’s funny, sure, but for any guy watching, it’s pure horror. Watch the Scene

  5. Pulp Fiction – The Basement: Marcellus Wallace’s nightmare in the basement of the pawn shop. Thankfully, he "gets medieval" on them shortly after, but getting to that point is a tough ride. Watch the Scene

  6. Casino Royale – The Chair Torture: 007 being hit in the "crown jewels" with a knotted rope. I find myself grabbing my own junk for comfort every time this plays. Watch the Scene

  7. Deliverance – "Squeal Like a Pig": This scene is why I will never, ever take a canoe trip in Georgia. It remains one of the most disturbing moments in film. Watch the Scene

  8. Reservoir Dogs – The Ear Slice: Set to the upbeat "Stuck in the Middle with You," this scene is unnerving because it makes casual torture feel almost... rhythmic. Watch the Scene

  9. 127 Hours – The Arm Amputation: You know it’s coming for the entire movie, but nothing prepares you for the sound of the nerve snapping when he finally breaks free. Watch the Scene

  10. Syriana – The Fingernails: George Clooney getting his fingernails removed with pliers. It’s slow, it’s deliberate, and it’s just frickin’ horrible. Watch the Scene

Any movie scenes out there that you find unbearable?

Talk to you tomorrow.

I will talk to you tomorrow.
I will persevere.
I will keep moving forward.

  1. Nothing can be worse than the photo I just got in an email (without warning) of a friend's knee that split open after a fall following two botched knee-replacement surgeries.
Love Deliverance. Both the book and the movie.
