Shife's Sparkly Spectacular - Day 23

Thought of the day

I recently watched American Masters: Pearl Jam Twenty again.
And it's still awesome.
Pearl Jam is easily one of my favorite bands.
I feel fortunate to have seen them live twice.
The first time I saw them was in 1998 at Grizzly Stadium in Missoula, Montana.
I was supposed to see them with one of my fraternity brothers but he could not make it.
Mrs. Shife ended up going with me.
If I had gone with my buddy, we would have been wasted out of our minds and most likely in jail.
Instead, I was in the stands with Mrs. Shife having a good time and behaving like a gentleman.
People were getting excited at the show and started jumping the fence to be on the stadium floor.
Police and security were not as excited about this idea and started arresting anyone they caught.
There is no doubt in my mind that I would have been one of those folks trying to jump the fence to get closer to the band if I had been there with my friend.
And based on our inebriated running skills, we would have been caught.
But I didn't have to worry about it because I was behaving myself with Mrs. Shife.
I also didn't fully comprehend Pearl Jam's popularity.
I strolled into town and thought I could get a hotel room the day of the concert.
Wrong.
The only reason we got a hotel room, which I can't confirm but believe was the last available room in the county, was because we told the staff that we didn't mind paint fumes as they had just finished remodeling a room.
The hotel was also in East Missoula so we had to walk 3 1/2 miles after we were done partying at 2 in the morning because the cabs were busy with all of the other Pearl Jam fans.
It was a wild night and the first of many fun weekend adventures with the lovely Mrs. Shife as we had only been dating for about a year.
Yay for memories!

  6. Never caught the Pearl Jam train. They started just as I left the farm for the first time and I spent those years, buying CD's (well after they stopped selling cassettes) from Columbia House for the price of a penny and promising to buy one later at regular price. Thus I was spent collecting all the music of those I listened to in the 70's and 80's. Only once I got out in the real world post college did I start hearing people talk about them but by then, it was too late to get hooked.

  7. Ah, the joys of youth! I never saw Pearl Jam, though I did get to see the Grateful Dead 3 times, not that I was a big fan, but the entertainment value was out of this world!

  8. Pearl Jam debuted during the time I was knee deep in raising kids. And even with 26 hours in a day, I didn't' find much time to discover new music.
