Thought of the day

I am adding something to the list of things that I feel have slightly misleading names.

Some examples include:

  • Peanut: A legume, not a nut
  • Russian dressing: Invented in New Hampshire.
  • Hawaiian pizza: Created by a Greek immigrant in Canada.
  • Jellyfish: Not a fish, as it lacks gills
  • Koala bear: A marsupial, not a bear
  • Funny bone: Not a bone, but where the ulnar nerve touches the humerus
  • Grape-Nuts: Contains no grapes or nuts
  • Red panda: The sole member of the Ailuridae family, not a panda
  • Crock-Pot: The brand that invented the small kitchen appliance, actually called a slow cooker
The item I would like to submit to this list is called ORF, which stands for optional retirement fund.
This is what they call the retirement package at my work.
However, it is far from optional.
It's mandatory that I sign up for it.
It is not a bad thing because I would probably spend the money on another basset hound.
Is there a word that drives you crazy because it is inaccurate or misleading?

Hope you are doing well and I will talk to you soon.

I will persevere.
I will keep moving forward.
I will be the stream.

  1. Lol. 'Optional?' I don't think that word means what they think it means. You have to show us the Christmas collars...surely there are Christmas collars. Unless of course, the money has been taken away and socked into your retirement.

    1. Of course there are collars. You know me better than that.

  2. Great list. I have one more to add--I took a trip to Rhode Island once and discovered something called 'Coffee Milk' and it possesses neither coffee nor milk!

    1. Interesting. I have never had the pleasure of coffee milk or Rhode Island.

  3. How about Russian tea cakes, that staple of Christmas. Actually an African delicacy, made by enslaved southern people for their families and their masters.

  4. I am stuck on optional yet mandatory.
    Someone needs a smack!
And the Food Pyramid fits that bill, too, being neither food nor pyramid.

  5. Here's my entry: Hush Puppies - the kind you eat, not the ones you wear on your feet. Wait, does that count as 2 entries?

  6. Hahahahahahaha, that Christmas present one!

  7. Optional, wow! Not even. Love the IKEA one and can relate to crossing oceans for those who wouldn't jump puddles. I learned to stop doing the latter; now to get my younger daughter to do so. The red panda is one of the most adorable animals in the world!

  8. That's about as close to a spa day as I get too. Love the Ikea cake:)

  9. I'll "keep my eyes peeled" for "the elephant in the room" or any other phrases like that to add to this list. I may evey "put out feelers" and "go down the rabbit hole" to help you out.

I do "have a bone to pick with you" though. Out here, there is no slow cooker, only a crock pot. To slow cook something usually means BBQ related.

  10. The jumping puddles one is particularly apt.

  11. Not exactly a name, but I think the serving size information on most packages is highly misleading

  12. You can't neglect your retirement fund.

  13. Optional . . . I mean, WHY? I'm not particularly bothered by using name brands as the noun. I always say 'Kleenex' because I think 'tissue' sounds pompous.

  14. Now I'm pondering what might be on the other sides of the Food Pyramid.

  15. Everyone is so clever, I've spent a day thinking of something to no avail. Love the food competition idea!

  16. Maybe they just like the acronym ORF. It's so much catchier than MRF, which sounds too close to another acronym which I hope you get without an explanation (hint: another R on the end might make it clearer).
I can't think of any words to add to your list; in fact I've never actually noticed the ones ON the list before, so thanks for making me aware. I love the IKEA meme!

  17. Well I hope the optional retirement fun is at least a good one.

  18. Save as much as you can for retirement. Have multiple accounts.

    1. Does it matter if they have money in the multiple accounts?

  19. Hahaha love it!
And talking about retirement, mine is so complicated I had to talk to someone about it cause I had no idea what the pre-requisites were.

    XOXO
