Happy last day of Spring or is it Happy Summer's Eve?
I don't know how things are in your neck of the woods but I am hoping our summer is more normal than our spring. It has been a little weird this spring weather-wise.
Yesterday, the high only got up to 60 and today it is only supposed to be 66.
We also got some snow in the mountains.
It is not feeling very summery.

I have had a few days this month where I have been struggling with my sobriety.
There is a Reddit group called r/stopdrinking that I visit to help me get my mind right and remember why I am doing what I am doing.
The thing I read that resonated with me was this: "It doesn't get easier. You get stronger."

Hayden recently discovered the movie "Mean Girls" and I think she has watched it at least 20 times since her first viewing. I have caught bits and pieces of it to be able to quote some of it to her like "That's so fetch" and it drives her bonkers. It's so much fun being a dad sometimes.

Kyle's summer got a little more structured recently as he started cross-country practice. They run 4 days a week at 830 in the morning and he's enjoying it so far. I think he is going to learn a lot from his coach as he has been doing this a long time and one of his former students recently won an NCAA title in the 1500 meters.

Happy Tuesday and I will talk to you tomorrow.

I will persevere.
I will keep moving forward.
I will be the stream.

  1. There are a lot of paths to sobriety, and everyone does what works for them. Good luck!

(And I know a lot of people who best thrive with in-person meetings like AA)

  3. "It doesn't get easier. You get stronger."

  5. I love that saying! It takes a while to get strong and lots of practice. Day by day. We are having your weather too. But it looks like summer is indeed coming!

    1. Sometimes it's hard to take it day by day but that is the best way.

  6. I love the movie Mean Girls!! Someone in my office uses the word "clutch" saying things like "thats so clutch". I have no idea what clutch means. Does it mean that something is cool?

  7. I stopped smoking and drinking 18 years ago, or around then. I do have a glass of wine every now and then, but simply can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke, not that the temptation doesn't occasionally pop up. There's truth in that saying you do get stronger.

  8. Stay dry Buddy, your life depends upon it. We have winter here now and you would probably laugh at what we call cold, 14C here today, down to 7C at night, but we are shivering and adding layers of clothing, turning on heaters etc.

  9. I quit smoking in 2001 after my father died of lung cancer. Like Dave, being around cigarette smoke is impossible for me. It triggers what seems like an allergic response. My nose is watering, my eyes are itching. I think that giving up drinking would be a heck of a lot easier if it triggered an attack of hives or something. I'm am glad you recognized the struggle and did not give in. That's so fetch.

    HuntleyBiGuy:
I commend you on your path to sobriety. Having been on the other side of someone battling the disease, I have seen how hard it can be. You are stronger than you think and you have so many people in your corner. As you say every post, you will persevere.

  12. I appreciate your honesty. It's one of the things that make you, you. I think that "it doesn't get easier, you get stronger" is absolutely true. Biceps aren't the only things that get stronger with regular workouts. Now if I could only apply this to my eating. I guess I am, in a way. I've started eating actual meals again instead of chips. Little steps become bigger steps. Wishing you mental strength for the struggle, Mr. S.

Well done to Kyle for taking another step to reach his goals. Anything that makes a teenager get up for an 8:30 start has to be something they love doing!

  13. I miss those summer days with my kids! Rediscovering 'old' movies like that with your kids is fun.
