An early Happy Mother's Day to all you fabulous and wonderful folks out there.
You are the best.
It's one of the toughest jobs in the world and there are days when you might feel like you are the worst.
But you are not.
And I am here to reassure you that you are amazing.
Because some moms are actually psychotic hose beasts.
Did your mother lock you in the closet for having a period?
Raise you to be a psychopath?
Speak to you in condescending banshee-like tones?
If not, then you’re doing alright.
Here are some of the best worst moms in cinema history.

  1. Joan Crawford in "Mommie Dearest."
    Two words: Wire hanger.

  2. Pamela Voorhees in "Friday the 13th."
Hope I am not spoiling a horror classic for you, but Jason isn’t even the killer in the first Friday: it’s his Cosby sweater-wearing momma who getting revenge on all those horny camp counselors.

  3. Momma in "Throw Mama From The Train."
Matricide is generally frowned upon, but once you meet Mrs. Lift you can understand where Danny DeVito’s character Owen is coming from.

  4. Norma Bates in "Psycho."
Poor Norman. Mrs. Bates demands that Norman take a Ginsu to anyone foolish enough to stop by.

  5. Margaret White in "Carrie."
While Carrie was a bit odd, it was largely her mother’s fault. She was convinced her daughter was bad and did anything and everything, to punish her for her Satan-like behavior. She even tried to kill her with a knife.

  6. Stepmother in "Cinderella."
Cinderella’s stepmother was the ultimate baddie. She was just plain mean for the sake of being mean, didn’t once think about Cinderella’s life or future, and spoiled her own children without caring that they were selfish and rude. Plus, she locked Cinderella in an attic.

Who do you think is the worst?
Or do you have another choice for the best worst mom?

Happy Friday and I might talk to you tomorrow.

I will persevere.
I will keep moving forward.
I will be the stream.

    1. I don't think you are alone in saying that, Margaret. Happy Mother's Day.

  3. My mother was a cross between Sybil's mom and that mother from Ordinary People, so she's tops on that list for me. I did okay with my sons by not becoming my mother. Balder Half helped. What was the question, again?

    1. Sounds like her and my sperm donor might be related. Sorry, Deedles, glad you and your balder half pushed through and did good. Happy Mother's Day. I think the question was, "Why is Mr. Shife so awesome?"

  4. Hmmm... it's a tough call, but I'll go with #4.

    1. I am still haunted by Mommie Dearest. Saw it a very impressionable age.

This is Kathy G. For some reason, for the last few weeks I can't comment by name if I'm using any type of Apple product (and today I don't have time to fire up the Windows-based laptop). Anywhoo, in my opinion Carrie's mother has got to win the prize. And if you read the book she's even more of a witch than in the movie.

    1. Hi Kathy G. Carrie didn't get much help at home. Margaret was a real piece of work.

  8. I don't know. 5 out of 6 of these are characters. I would pick Lori Vallow Daybell. Eeeeeeeeee.....

  9. On that list I have seen only Psycho and Cinderella. I purposely avoided all the rest. My own mother was kind, liberal, better than I deserved.

  10. I have no comment, as I am currently fed up with my own mother and trying to calm myself down so I can give her a happy mother's day in spite of myself.

Happy Mother's Day to Mrs. Shife! And to all the other mamas out there who try their best, which is all we can do.
