Smell Ya Later

Now that the new vacation smell has worn off and I'm back at the salt mines, I'm delivering a fresh bouquet of fatigue, stress, disillusionment, taco meat and the most expensive aftershave you can buy at the dollar store to the world.
It's not quite as pungent as Sex Panther by Odeon but it is up there.

Let there be sight

I can no longer hide it.
I need to wear reading glasses especially when I have to read super small print.
And I need light.
Reading in the dark is not a good option anymore.
But an independent lab named Ms. Frizzle gave them her approval.

Friday night lights

Hayden had her first football game and she loved it.
She had fun and almost broke a long run for a touchdown.
We have also dipped our toes into the sport parents world and so far, so good.
Most of the parents on her team are pretty level-headed and are just glad the kids get to get out and play.

Life at 12

Kyle's filling up his extracurricular time with Minecraft and Star Wars club.
We also try to watch as much Brooklyn 99 as possible before we get in trouble with Mrs. Shife.
He also loves to cook and given the opportunity, he will make Hayden dinner especially if she reads to him while he's in the kitchen.

Stress

I am feeling little overwhelmed at work.
My supervisor went on paternity leave so my workload has increased during his absence and I am also taking a continuing ed class about digital marketing analytics from MIT.
I will give you a moment to reign in your jealousy.
My class is over in a week and my supervisor comes back in two so there's light at the end of the tunnel.

RIP Norm

Finally, I am little crestfallen because Norm MacDonald. He was a unique, one-of-a-kind comic that wasn't for everybody but boy, oh, boy, he was for me. His sense of humor agreed with me a lot. One of my favorite things ever is Norm doing an impression of Burt Reynolds but going by the name Turd Ferguson

Meme dump

I am better than I was. I will be better than I am.

I will persevere. I will keep moving forward. I will be the stream.

  1. Readers? Just another unwanted sign of maturity. And believe it or not, I do know a little bit about losing shoes at midnight... and you're right.

  2. As one who wears glasses I feel your pain, but tje joy of being able to read without squinting, or god forbid, asking for help, outweighs the ego. I think.

I hadn't heard about Norm. RIP, sir, and thanks for the laughs.

I saw a meme that said the Pfizer vaccine wouldn't kill you because Pfizer wants to keep you around to sell you Viagra.

    1. Most definitely. The ego has taken a backseat a lot lately due to my advancing age, Bob.

  3. I have been known to use my cellphone to take pictures of small print directions so I can enlarge them big enough to read... with my glasses. Sigh.

Norm MacDonald... another sigh. He was my cup of tea too.

  4. Welcome to middle age! Fun fact: if you’ve always been nearsighted, that’s known to improve as the farsightedness issue progresses. Being read to while cooking? That’s sweet! I hope it’s something they tell their kids about in the future.

  5. Work sounds like...work. Retirement is much less stressful. I too have trouble with small print; perhaps I need to carry around a magnifying glass. I've never heard of Norm! Am I too old?

    1. Nope, you are not too old. Norm is an acquired taste.

  7. I'm glad to hear Kyle and Hayden are settling in at school. Count yourself lucky if the sports parents are level headed. I've seen the opposite and it's not pretty! Sorry to hear you are over stressed at work. I hope it does indeed improve soon. Love the backwards Jaws!
    Take care of yourself!

  8. I've worn glasses since high school. Your prescriptions will get stronger and stronger.

Those balls look like big mothballs. Maybe they're bear balls.

    1. It might be cantalope, Mike, but bear balls would be way cooler.

  9. Ok, so here it goes: I like you with glasses and the beard. There. I said it. Very Clark Kent of you. I wear bifocals because I can't see sh*t. I can read just fine but anything beyond ten feet is a blur. So there's that.
I love the idea of one of the kids reading to the other while the other cooks! Life skills. Goals.
And hold on there. There IS light at the end of the tunnel...

    XOXO

  10. Good for Hayden. And sweet of Kyle.
J has two kinds of 'readers' one for
actual reading and one for computer
    stuff.
    xoxo :-)

  11. I have been wearing reading glasses for 10 years and I
m 51 years old. I read a lot and when it started getting hard to read the small print on the books, I went to the store and bought 3 pairs of reading glasses. lol. I still have the same 3 pair and I put one pair in each room so I always have some close.

  12. My older brother was dyslexic before dyslexia was invented (?). He also was skilled at engineering designs. My younger brother was clumsy (or dyxlexic about model airplanes). The younger read the instructions out loud to the older who did all the construction. Children are so ingenious at solving their problems.

  13. Pro Tip: If you scatter multiple pairs of readers around the place (you can get them at the same dollar store you get your cologne), you will always know where your readers are because they always migrate to a pile on the bedside table.

That picture of Kyle cooking as his sister reads to him has to be the very sweetest thing I've seen today.

  14. Ok first off if someone would read to me while I cooked I would love that! I love that your children cook!! Honestly that picture is the best!
Norm MacDonald passing did a number on us as well. We LOVE him. There was a show where he was telling a story and he said cock. He froze forgetting he was on the airwaves. Then when they said it was hbo or whatever it was, he said it constantly throughout the show. Only Norm could make that funny! And now we randomly say it the way he did at any given time and it cracks us up!

  15. I already wear bifocals but even at that, the smaller print is getting harder to read. I downloaded a magnifying app for my phone to help with that; pretty cool. Love seeing those two together, very heartwarming.

  16. I love that your kiddos are back outside playing sports. And loved the fairy tale meme!
And I have been wearing reading glasses for awhile. I did get offended however when my optometrist said "maybe you should think about bi-focals so that you don't have to switch out your frames when you need to read". It was a slap in the face, but in truth, reality.

    1. I think I will be relating to that reality soon, JM.

  17. Oh lord, I feel so old. I've had bifocals for . . . so long I can't remember how many years it's been. Regular glasses of any kind are quite high fashion at the moment and yours look great. Now if you really want to look elderly, get the half-glasses like my brother has and spend half your time peering over the rims at people in befuddlement.

Do I see a left-hander in that kitchen photo? Or is Kyle just taking advantage of the counter propping up his stirring arm? I think that is the loveliest picture of your children.

  19. Welcome to the world of the four-eyes. I've been here about a year already. :)
This last season of Brooklyn 99 has truly been for us fans. I'm so glad that they were able to go out on their own terms. I will miss the show, to be sure.
Sorry to read that work has been a stressor. :(
I think I would have enjoyed playing football when I was Hayden's age. Us Gen-X girls didn't have that option, if I recall rightly.
Hope all is well with you and yours!

  20. Kyle and I are just wrapping up season 7 of 99 and I am going to miss it more than I thought I would. I even asked Kyle if he wanted to rewatch it again.
Good to hear from you, Bea. Take care.
