Be Happy

What's making me happy

New TV shows.
It has been a little bit since I found some shows to watch that were making me feel the opposite of sadness. Here is what I have been watching lately:

Mrs. Shife and I are also on a roll as we have watched several movies over the past few weeks.
Our latest cinematic adventure was "Hector and the Search For Happiness."

What's not making me happy

I have been using a template on the blog lately and, for the most part, it has been working.
It helps me keep my blog thoughts organized.
For example, if I have been thinking about where do you draw on the line on partly sunny vs. partly cloudy then it would go under "Observations."
Or it could have fallen under "What's not making me happy" if I learned they mean the exact same thing and the weather folks have been plotting against us.
I think I would have a much better outlook if it was partly sunny instead of partly cloudy
But that isn't making me unhappy.
Using the header "What's not making me happy" is doing it.
I was thinking about it and I am basically creating a mindset where I am actively searching for something that makes my blood pressure boil.
Not a great headspace.
I tend to trend more pessimistic than optimistic anyway so I don't need any additional help in making that equation even more unbalanced.
So it is going away and being replaced with doggies.
Maybe.
Probably not.
We'll see.

Updates

Sorry, William H. Holbert, we no longer have anything in common.
After 20 years of playing recreational softball, I finally hit a home run out of the park.
I have hit plenty of inside-the-park home runs but the over-fence variety always eluded me.
Until yesterday.
So I got that going for me.
Which is nice.
Now me and Davy Force are kindred spirits.

Observations

  • A vendor used the phrase "It's all Gucci moving forward" in a meeting and it made me feel like I am 90-years-old. Never heard it before and don't need to hear it again. Please also remember that I have been saying "It's all gravy, baby" to drive Hayden crazy for the past two weeks so I am certainly not a barometer for what is cool.
  • I have been spending a lot of time looking up motivational quotes for Hayden, and I ran across "Be the Bison." I liked it and it is certainly not a bad way to handle things. I have definitely spent way too much time trying to avoid the storm.
  • Do you have a favorite app on your phone? Looking for suggestions to help stimulate me positively instead of doom scrolling on news sites.

Go Out on a Meme

I will try and do better.

I will persevere. I will keep moving forward. I will be the stream.

Congrats on the home run. I don't follow the volleyball, so I hope I said that right! =)
I kid. I follow the volleyball!

  6. Congratulations on the out of the park home run. Now you're ready for the big leagues! One of my favorite phone apps is "Map My Walk". You start it when you go out for a walk and it tracks your distance, time, pace, elevation, etc. When you are done it shows a map of where you have walked. It can also be used with a bicycle. I wear a Fitbit anyway but I love all the information I get from this app. It's positive encouragement for me to walk more.

  8. Congrats on the home run! You find the best memes. We get a lot of air traffic, so my fave app is Plane Finder. It’s fun to see where these planes started and are headed to.

  9. Mosquito Coast, a cult classic, at least if you want to join my cult. "Goodbye America, and have a nice day!"

I found an app for the card game Hearts and have been on a "bitch" hunt ever since when I have a few minutes to kill.

    1. Haven't played Hearts in forever. It was pretty popular way to kill time back in college.

  11. okay first off the dog who missed the truck bed made me say Aaaww out loud in my office where I am alone. Congrats on the out of the park HR! Good job on that one. We are also watching Mare of Eastown, but don't you think sometimes it moves too slowly? i do love the dad jokes too!! The only app I use on my phone besides smart news is a game to unscramble words for points called Word Legend. Hoping to keep alzheimers away...LOL

    1. Thank you, Peg. Mare can be a little slow but it picked up the pace in the last episode. Quite the shocker near the end.

  12. Have you ever watched Mr Inbetween on FX and Hulu? I'm rewatching seas 1 and 2 as the 3rd and final season will start soon. It's pretty violent but good, and that sounds strange to say. Tony used to take his youngest son to swim meets years ago; his corny Dad line was 'be one with the dolphin'.

  13. I don't have a favorite app. I get sucked in by the usual time wasters, TikTok, Instagram, but I don't post. I am strictly a lurker.

  14. Focusing on the negative and what makes me unhappy is a constant struggle, especially when the kids are gone. My therapist told me "If you're driving and staring down at the ditch, guess where you end up?". Hang in there sir and congrats on the home run.

  16. I used to be extremely pessimistic to the point where it seriously annoyed anyone around me. I think my brain grew up and told me to knock it off at some point. I don't know. Here's a bit of cheese for you: I hit a home run out of the park when I met my wife. In spite of some of my posts I mean this 150%. A fine snicker-inducing collection of memes for the morning. Stay well, Mr. Shife, and keep looking on the brighter side. Oh, and sorry, but no advice on phone apps from me. I'm about as old school and NOT tech savvy as anyone could be. It's a miracle I even know how to log in to my blog.

  18. Hi Mr. S. - I love that doggo with the flower crown. I think you are smart to get rid of the heading about things that don't make you happy, for the exact reason you gave. Just like people wearing a path wherever they take a shortcut across the grass, repeating thoughts will wear a groove in our brains. Much better to have it be a happy groove, even if it feels forced at first.
