12th Man

What's making me happy

Kyle is turning 12 tomorrow.
Quite a few posts about the big guy's birthday if you want to see how much he has grown over the years.
I will avoid the excessive nostaglia and trips down memory lane as I don't want to be ambushed by people trained in the ancient Japanese martial arts that are employed especially for espionage and assassinations and seem to enjoy cutting widely cultivated Asian herbs of the lily family with pungent edible bulbs in my presence.

I went way out of way to say ninjas cutting onions.
Back to the story.
Kyle is going to get big surprise for his birthday.
He has been pining for an Oculus Quest VR headset for several months now.
Mrs. Shife didn't hesitate with her answer.

We had several reasons why we didn't think it was a good idea but mostly because we wanted to wait until Kyle was a little older.
But Kyle was undeterred and spent some time researching why he was mature and responsible enough to handle it and it won over Mrs. Shife.
But he doesn't know that... yet.
He is the getting the VR headset for his birthday but he is still convinced that he isn't mature or responsible enough for it and he has been pretty bummed about our decision.

It was breaking my heart when I tried to console him after Mrs. Shife gave him her "final" answer because I knew he was going to get it but I had to stretch the truth a bit.
He is going to be one happy 12-year-old tomorrow.

What's not making me happy

Watching "Shameless."
This is its 11th and final season.
It had a good run but the last few seasons have been less than stellar.
And the final season is even lesser than stellar.
I am pretty much hate watching it at this point.

Updates

I am getting the COVID vaccine next week.
I was supposed to get it this week but I got a cold and I want my immune system to be better than stellar when I get the shot.

The over/under for stellar being used on this blog was 6.
We are at 4.
This is so exciting said no one who is still reading at this point.
Did you also know that Stellar is a payment network?
We are now at 5.

Observations

If your office is at home and you take a week off from work, you should go somewhere or it can turn out that you don't really feel like you are taking a break from work.
We had some spring break plans last week but we ended up staying home as we had some family come through town to visit.
It was great seeing them but I didn't feel like I got much of a break from work because I was at my office.
I also mentioned last week on the blog that I had to help out with a couple of problems at work while I was supposed to be on vacation so that didn't help the situation.
Anywhoo... we are going out of town on our next getaway and that should eliminate this problem.
And that, my friends, will be

Go Out On A Meme

I will try and do better.

I will persevere. I will keep moving forward. I will be the stream.

  1. Kyle might actually cry, that is an amazing gift! I have a 23 year old that would love to get one of those for his birthday lol. Kyle is going to be one very happy young (but very mature, responsible and stellar) little man tomorrow!

  3. Oh and I forgot to mention a few things (got too excited over the Oculus Quest VR headset)! I hate when I get invested in a great series and then it goes downhill. I always keep watching anyway no matter how painful. Sorry your vacation wasn't a vacation, that sucks. Great memes today lol. Still hoping you'll decided to jump in for the A to Z challenge. We don't get to see enough of you around here! Now I'm done. :)

  6. Happy Birthday to Kyle! That is a big birthday, his last year before turning into a teenager! I love the gift you are giving him - take lots of pictures, it's going to be fun. I just have to ask, is he going to have trouble keeping his new gift out of Dad's hands? I hear those things are fun. Kyle is a smart guy and will do great with them. I love that picture of him!

    You guys have fun tomorrow!

    1. I tried out the headset, Bonnie, and it is quite fun but it is all his. Maybe if he got a baseball game I would be more inclined to play.

  8. Some time ago, Tim got caught up in a series called Hell on Wheels. At first I was mildly caught up in it. By the time it was over I was walking through the room groaning "what is he crying about noooow?!!" And Tim would answer listlessly "dunno." But by gosh, we are not quitters.

(I have no idea why not.)

Happy birthday to Kyle The Responsible. 12 is an important year. Can't wait to hear about his VR shock.

  10. That kid is gonna go nuts when he see the gift. What a great thing.

And I'm with you about Shameless. This last season has been less than, but, like a traffic accident, I cannot look away. Oy.

  12. Ohhh Kyle is gonna really remember this one.
Nothing like getting something we really, really want. He actually spent time researching why he should get it? Whoa. I know people in their forties who are not that balanced. He'll be fine.

And you managed to make me cackle with the memes. The one about asking someone to dinner is fantastic, btw. I'll keep that one in mind.

    XOXO

  13. Fortunately for my girls, they aren't into gaming. Unfortunately for me, they aren't into gaming. I suppose it is probably fortunate for me that they aren't into gaming. I have more time to spend on my other bad habits.

  14. That's going to be exciting to see his face when he receives his surprise gift! Can you film it? The restaurant meme is spot on. I hadn't even realized it. Yay for going away from home next time. My mom always talks about how important it is to "get a change of scenery." I can't imagine working from home, although many(most?) people are doing so these days, including both my daughters.

  15. So that’s what the kids want these days? I remember thinking an iPod was quite the modern technology gift for my kids. Then again, I was excited to get a Timex when I was a kid!

People are still getting colds? I thought masks were preventing that!

  16. Happy Birthday Kyle! Boy is he gonna be a happy camper. Yes a staycation for me has never worked. You get sucked in by that damn computer or text. Go far away with no wifi even better. The caribbean perhaps. My hubby watches Shamless and has said the exact same thing. I never liked it and stopped after 2 or 3 episodes. He was sad when he heard it was ending but the other night he said is was time to go.

  17. 12! holy mackerel, it seems like yesterday that you found kyle in the cabbage patch.

got my first vaccination today and now i'm operating on good faith that trudeau will be able to come through with the second dose in 4 months. it was total chaos because the govt gave left over vaccine to some pharmacies and the code of the west was enacted, every man for himself.
