I did a few of these lists back in 2005 and thought I would revisit today to see how much my tastes have changed and also because I have two things working against me today:
1) Tuesdays suck and
2) I think a lot of people will be turning their attention to the presidential debate tonight.
Tuesdays are a little rougher because it's still not Friday, science says so, and the lovely Mrs. Shife gets home later than usual from work.
So yours truly is the master and commander of the Shifley hacienda for way too long and Kyle and Hayden usually turn into sugar-soaked scallywags spectaculary sabotaging Señor Shife's serenity.
With that being said, I will keep things short and sweet.
You know what I just did there.
You're welcome.
You're welcome.
Give me your top 5 comedies.
You can do more or less but share with me at least one movie that makes you laugh.
I'll go first.
2020 list
- "Step Brothers"
- "Groundhog Day"
- "Old School"
- "The Big Lebowski"
- "Fletch"
Honorable mentions
- "Animal House"
- "Tropic Thunder"
2005 list
- "Animal House"
- "Caddyshack"
- "Old School"
- "The Big Lebowski"
- "O Brother Where Art Thou"
Honorable Mentions
- "Wedding Crashers"
- "Sorority Boys"
My preferences have changed a little bit over the past 15 years but two of the movies that are on my current list were not out yet in 2005 as both "Tropic Thunder" and "Step Brothers" were released in 2008.
What do you think?
Have a great rest of your week and thanks for stopping by.

I will persevere. I will keep moving forward. I will be the stream.
"the odd couple", "send me no flowers", "groundhog day", "napoleon dynamite", "animal house".
ReplyDeleteExcellent choices, anne marie in philly.
DeleteMr. Shife, would you agree that when Pauline Hickey was 17 in 1985 she was THE most incredibly gorgeous bird of all-time ! ?.

DeleteI have not seen too many newer comedies but the two old ones that come to mind are "Airplane" (great sight gags) and "Caddyshack". I have mixed feelings about the debate tonight. I'm afraid it will be like a car wreck. You don't want to look but you can't look away!
ReplyDeleteI like "Airplane," Bonnie. Been a bit since I last saw it. The debate was definitely a car wreck.
DeleteGrumpy Old Men
ReplyDeleteThe Birdcage
I'm not sure I have five favorites, but I know I generally enjoy things that make me laugh much more than things that scare me. I don't like deep suspense or blood and guts.
I won't be watching the debate. My vote won't be changing before election day and I've seen enough ugliness, garbage and plain old bullshit this year to last me a lifetime.
I'm pretty sure the only purpose of debates is theater. And we've all seen enough of it, I think. If there are still undecided voters, then they're not paying attention, now are they?
I am cooking and cleaning today, I finally started feeling guilty about how awful the house looks.
Your two choices are good ones, Ami. I forgot about Grumpy Old Men. Might have to revisit that one. Hope the cooking and cleaning went well.
DeleteHmmm... whatever the kids liked.
ReplyDeletexoxo, take care, :-)
Sounds about right, AK.
DeleteIn no particular order:
ReplyDeleteUndercover Brother
Happy, Texas
The Producers (the original one)
Tropic Thunder
The Birdcage
Undercover Brother is awesome. Thanks, Deedles.
DeleteOh, dear, Mr. Schife. I have not seen a movie since you know when. Please, please tell me the sugar fanatic in the first gif is not my hero Stephen Colbert! When he was younger, with blacker hair. Please.
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed your hero, Joanne. It is a GIF from his days on Comedy Central hosting "The Colbert Report."
DeleteI can't think of many movies except The BLues Brothers. After that I'm drawing a blank. I watch a lot of comedy specials on Netflix. I love Bill Burr, Jim Gaffigan, and John Mulaney. Also Billy Gardell did one standup special that was really good. I wish he would do another one. It's on Amazon Prime.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely ... Groundhog Day ... Sausage Party [one viewing only needed] ...Big Lebowski
ReplyDeleteSuperlative alliteration, Shife! :D
ReplyDeleteTop 5 funny films/films I love that make me laugh, or as many I can think of, would be:
Bridesmaids
In Bruges
Roxanne
Galaxy Quest
Coming to America
Shaun of the Dead
Thanks, Bea. I thought it was a good string of S words. I am still working on Kyle to watch Galaxy Quest with me.
DeleteUnfortunately, I am not a movie watcher these days, but my fave ones back in the day were Ferris Buehler’s Day Off and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
ReplyDeleteThose two are good ones to have on a list, Bijoux.
DeleteOMG that Kid with the Cotton Candy is HILARIOUS, I could watch that over and over again and never get enough of how it epitomizes Kids on a Sugar Blaze! Thankfully the Grandchild I have left to raise hates Sweet shit but she eats these things called Takis addictively, that are likely eating a hole in her stomach and are so hot they can't possibly be good for her. I still buy them since I'm Old and by the time carnage is done I won't be vertical anymore to be accountable for bad Parenting. *winks* My Favs include: Get Shorty, Animal House, Borat, Chevy Chase Christmas Vacation, About Schmidt, As Good As It Gets. The last two were a tie for Jack Nicholson Comedies so I couldn't narrow it down to a List of just the five.
ReplyDeleteI like you list, Bohemian. We take the path of least resistance sometimes with the kids as well.
DeleteI just thought of No. 7 for my List... The Rocky Horror Picture Show... I Loved to go to the Midnight Screenings of that Cult Classic back in the day!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Bohemian.
DeleteI just saw a funny Canadian movie on Amazon Prime called "The Grand Seduction". A good laugh, for sure.
ReplyDeleteI think I have two favorites only:
ReplyDelete- Groundhog Day
- Animal House
I'll watch of your lists..... thank you for the list
My favorite of all time? Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Spectacularly hilarious!
