Take it Easy, 2020

I mentioned last week that our favorite F word turned 4.
We got her a tennis ball pinata.

It didn't quite turn out like I had hoped.

Reason 1,987 that I didn't get an engineering degree.
Frizzle's other present was a trip to the lake.
And that really didn't turn out like we had hoped.
Frizzle thought it would be fun to celebrate her fourth trip around the sun with an all-expenses-paid by Mr. Shife trip to the ICU at the local animal emergency hospital.
She is a yellow lab.
She loves water.
But she reached her limit yesterday as came home from the lake with water toxicity.
As far as we can tell, she swallowed too much water while fetching the ball from the lake and got really, really sick.
She was bloated, foaming at the mouth, lethargic, had trouble breathing, loss of coordination and excessive salivation.
It was scary.
She got home around 5:30 and we were at the animal hospital by 7.
The vets think that bringing her in as soon as we did helped with Frizzle's quick recovery.
I was able to pick her up this morning.

And she is slowly coming around to her old self but she has been pretty tired all day.
2020 sure has been a hoot.
Getting the bill for an overnight stay at that ICU of an emergency animal hospital is also a hoot.
Is anyone friends with an organ harvester?
Most of mine are still pretty good.
I would probably pass on the liver.
It was doing fine but then 2020 hit and the old liver has been working a little harder this year.
Seriously, it is all good and we are just grateful that Ms. Frizzle is OK and we still have our yellow dog.
Here's to having a great rest of the week.
Thanks for stopping by and I will talk to you soon.

I will persevere. I will keep moving forward. I will be the stream.

  1. I'm glad Ms. F recovered and that you didn't have a Stroke when the Vet Bill came! That would have just cost more for your ICU stay. *Winks* Is anything turning out as we envisioned or planned for 2020? I think not.

  2. Oh no, poor Ms. Frizzle! I didn't know a dog could get that so easily. I guess that put a quick end to her birthday celebrations. You were smart to take her in so quickly.

I love the tennis ball pinata. What a perfect dog birthday surprise!

I sure agree with you about 2020. We have had more than our share of bad occurances this year, even without Covid. I think Covid just put a curse on the whole year. On to 2021!

  5. Oh no! Poor doggie!
Wait, water toxity? Who knew? And yes, those visits to the vet can be totally expensive. A tooth-brushing, nail-cutting, bath-giving, general-revision visit could set you back several hundred dollars. Is there ACA for pets?
Glad the doggie is doing better. BTW, loved the tennis ball piƱata!

    XOXO

    1. There is pet insurance, Sixpence, and I am pretty sure it provides better coverage than some people get.

  7. So glad Frizzle is okay!!!
We've had lots of warnings for local
ponds but we've been in the 100s for
    days.
Take care, stay safe! xoxox :-)

  8. OH I am so sorry. But glad she's home and doing well. I'm glad it wasn't anything like blue-green algae. That almost killed my lab and she was only in it for 2 minutes. Before we got our lab my husband said, "we should get dog insurance." I laughed and said our own insurance isn't that great. But I gave in and it was the best thing we ever did. (I hate when he's right) Because we got it when she was only 4 month old it was not that expensive. $20 a month and 2 ACL surgeries later and a ER visit for toxity of the water (above mentioned) and I never paid much. (it's 90/10) BTW I loved the tennis ball pinata!! Here's to Frizzle feeling like her ole self very soon!!

  9. Love the pinata! Who needs an engineering degree when you have genius?
We don't have a dog anymore, but if we ever had another, we'd definitely buy insurance.

Our half-lab chewed on a gallon jug of motor oil that was out for the recycler when she was a puppy. We thought she was going to die. But she lived for 15 years, so maybe ingesting oil is good?

    Or, labs are tough.
    Yeah, let's go with that.

Hope your doglet is doing fine now. :)

    1. We had family who had labs and they ate a whole bunch of cooking oil. Didn't quite make it to 15 but they powered through.

  11. If you put it on your credit card, you get points. I don't know if you get points for interest, too. But, Mrs. F is worth it. Priceless, as they say. And that's why banks invented plastic.

  13. I'm so glad your baby is doing okay. She's beautiful!!! HAPPY belated BIRTHDAY pretty girl! I know how expensive it is to get your pets properly treated. I have three dogs and a cat. One of my dogs has severe chronic allergies and since the first of the year we've spent thousands of dollars on treatments and meds for her.

  14. Good looking pooch! I always thought you would be a basset hound man for life. Glad you're bringing in all that diversity. That fun garage is a great idea. It's like it's only a garage so they can beat the hell out of the place.

    1. Me too, Dr. Ken, but I have been won over by the yellow lab. She is just a good family dog. We need to get a basset puppy because the rescues aren't big fans of little kids they didn't grow up with.

  16. Water toxicity is a scary thing. We never had to deal with it but every summer I read about it so much. You had a much better outcome than many cases I read about; so happy for you all.

  18. wow, I never heard of a Lab having too much water! Dogs can be expensive. Our "rescue" dog has had to have two knee surgeries. So much for buying a $50 pound dog!
