Mr. Shife's March Madness 2016 - Day 22

I was motivated earlier this year to correct a bad habit I had gotten into when it came to writing and talking. I used the word "so" a lot in emails, and discovered that I used it even more when I talked to folks. So (come on I had to do it) my goal has to do eliminate it in electronic and actual conversations, and it hasn't been going well.
I didn't want to be Bill Lumbergh.
Anyway, I was thinking about you, my wonderful blogging friends, is there anything that you want to improve with your grammar or do you have a grammar pet peeve? One of my biggest pet peeves is when people call something a first annual event. If it hasn't happened yet, then it is a a premier or inaugural event.
Lay it on me, people. Tell me what you what drives you nuts.

I will persevere. I will keep moving forward. I will be the stream.

  1. A certain TV personality who will state something three different ways to illustrate a point, will present something thrice to emphasize a point, will declare something in a trilogy to spotlight a point.

  2. The word that irritates me is 'Well' which is usually used to start a news report. Anchor person on TV asks reporter a question and invariably the reply starts with 'Well'. I'd better study the way I speak in case I am doing something that irritates.

  3. nothing irritates me today, tomorrow everything might annoy me. but i do get a little annoyed when i read a book and the paragraphs take up whole pages.

  4. I hate it when people misuse the word "literally." If someone says their headache was so bad their head literally exploded, I'd better be seeing blood and gore. Most people also use the word "decimate" incorrectly. It actually means one tenth of something was destroyed, not the entire thing.
