Random Acts of Shifeness

--> I wasn't expecting a different child when the odometer hit 5 for Kyle but you never know. Fortunately for us, he's pretty much the same kiddo. As far as his birthday party went, he had a great time with lots of family and friends, and when I find some time free time I will edit the video I shot of the occasion. The weather could have cooperated a little more but other than that it was a good day.
--> Thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes. I really do appreciate it.
--> We have told Kyle when he climbs the tree in our backyard then he gets a tree house. Well he's getting closer as you can see by the below picture. And if you look closely you can see the basset hound photo bomb dog. What the picture doesn't show is how Kyle took a luggage bag strap and turned into a seat harness so his chances of success were greater. Mrs. Shife and I were surprised by his ingenuity. I have included a photo of the strap along with Tank because the husky hound always finds a way into our pictures.

--> Anybody else excited about Game of Thrones starting on Sunday?
--> Speaking of TV, my new favorite show is Vikings on the History Channel. Anyone else watch it?
--> Another question for you. I saw this on Facebook. If you could buy a ticket to see one rock star that is longer with us perform who would it be? Kurt Cobain? Elvis? Jim Morrison? John Lennon? Bob Marley? Janis Joplin? Tupac? Johnny Cash? Jimi Hendrix? And a whole bunch of others. My pick would be Kurt Cobain.
--> My 1,000 miles update: Only 732.6 more to go.
--> Finally, tomorrow is a bittersweet day for me because it's my Mom's birthday. I will visit her memorial tree and probably say a few things to her. Mostly I will just miss her more than usual.

Thanks for stopping by. Have a nice weekend.

I will persevere. I will keep moving forward. I will be the stream.

  1. What were you thinking about promising him a treehouse? You better get the wood and nails out and get busy :-) I've never seen Game of Thrones or Vikings but did enjoy True Detective on HBO. Far from a rock star, but I would love to hear John Denver again.

  2. I tried to start to start watching Game of Thrones after what South Park did with the 'Black Friday' episodes. Unfortunately, I feel that I've neglected to watch it for so long, it would be impossible to catch up at this point.
Colin figured out that he could climb up the tall bushes in the yard, but that's as far as he's going to get: we have one tree, and it's too big to climb.

  3. Sounds like the birthday went well. I see the formation of a tree house is already in your mind, Matt. You have an ingenious child on your hands. Who would I like to see again? Maybe John Lennon and John Denver, definitely not Elvis.

  4. It would be hard for me to choose between Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix. Did you ever see Nirvana unplugged? Pretty good stuff Maynard.
One of the coolest things my dad ever did when I was a kid was to build a really nice tree house on the ground. Then we used a pulley, some rope and a Datsun pickup to get it up in the tree, good memories, don't wait too long to build that tree house. See you later.

  5. I LOVE the idea of having him climb the tree to get the tree house. It gives him a goal and a sense of accomplishment when he gets to the top, and it keeps him exercising. He will remember that his whole life and tell people how cool his parents are.

Also, that last line you omitted a word "blank her more that usual" could maybe be "miss her more than usual?" Not being a doucher, just trying to help.

    Rock on, Shife.

  6. i'm gonna have to go with dirty jim morrison. i still listen riders on the story and texas big beat radio on a regular basis.

i'm waiting until i get all the vikings episodes on pvr then it'll be a one per night deal. if i wait a week between episodes, old age sets in and there seem to be holes in the plot.

  7. I always wanted to see Joe Strummer (The Clash) and even had one opportunity to see him and blew it. I'd like a do over please!

I love "The Vikings" and "Game of Thrones". Unfortunately we are only doing the channels we can get off the air around us. It really sucks. But at least I get to see Hannibal, which is much closer to "The Red Dragon" book than "Hannibal".
Its really been fun watching Kyle grow up here. He is so bright! He will be up that tree in no time at all.
Your mom must have been a great mom because you have turned into a great dad.
