Random Acts of Shifeness

  • At one point in my life I actually kept up to date with music and actually introduced people to new artists. Oh how times have changed. Now I am rocking out to NPR in the car or listening to "Victor Vito" with Kyle. But the last few days I was able to download some new music and I am enjoying O.A.R. and The Lumineers.
  • When I was a teenager I got yelled at by my Dad a lot for spending too much time in the bathroom. Get your mind out of the gutter. I was actually making sure my hair was perfectly feathered before I took the garbage out to the community dumpster (we lived on a military base so you had to walk a bit to take out the trash) because you never know how many teenage girls you might encounter on your trip to the giant garbage can. Nowadays I spend a lot time in the bathroom - again get out of the gutter - but I am busy removing hair when I really don't want it. Still not sure why we have not evolved enough to be done with ear hair.
  • Little Miss Hayden is frickin' 8-months-old. Can you believe that?
  • Kyle is still 3 and it appears that we almost have a potty trained boy. He still needs to wear Pull-Ups at night and during naps but other than that he is doing awesome. The only problem we might have is that he really does not care for underwear so he spends most of the day going commando. At this point, I don't care. Once he is a graduate of the Shifley Potty Training Academy then we can start worrying about the banana hammocks.
  • Have I mentioned that Craig Ferguson makes me LOL? I seriously laugh out loud watching this man.
  • I had no idea when I woke up this morning I would have to talk about this but as a parent and just a dude who gives a shit ... what in the hell is wrong with our effin' species? Unfortunately, we live in a violent world and I have become numb to a lot of things but I am deeply bothered and saddened by the tragic loss of live at the theater in Colorado. How many of these senseless tragedies will it take before we starting taking the action to prevent this from happening again? I think Americans have a right to own guns but for the life of me I don't know why we need to have assault weapons.
  • This got depressing real fast. Below are pictures of my pride and joy. Initially I thought against putting their pictures on this post because of the last statement, but then I reminded myself when tragedies like this do strike it is important to remember why life is so precious and important. You have to enjoy each day and let those people know that you love them because you just never know when your time is up.
  • “When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it--always.” ― Mahatma Gandhi
  • Enjoy your weekend. Thanks for stopping and take care of yourself.

  • I will persevere. I will keep moving forward. I will be the stream.

    1. You and the Mrs. sure make beautiful babies! Yay for Kyle and his progress with potty training!

My X used to comb his hair before we left, as soon as we got in the car, then again when we got to where we were going and again once we were inside. Drove me nuts.

There is no solution for some problems like what happened at that theater. No way to see it coming. No way to tell who can or can't be trusted. Its getting scary out there.

    2. I wonder sometimes about us as a species as well. It's times like that I wonder why bother to bring a kid into this mess, but I think it's a reminder to make things better in any way you can.

    4. I've seen OAR live about 10-12 times... a huge fan. I saw The Lumineers for the first time a few weeks ago. I plan to check them out more.

Another band I recently discovered is Imagine Dragons.

    5. I agree, even when terrible things happen, you should think more of those you love.

      Love the hair story ;-)

    6. Your babies are adorable! Thank you for the pictures, they always make me so happy! Despite my begging them to stop, my kids keep insisting on getting older and I really miss the younger years. They are great now too but kids bigger than me aren't the same kind of cute as tiny kids are!

I love victor vito. I still have all the words to the entire cd memorized because we played it so often. It would be totally weird if I put those songs on my iPod right? But I kind of miss Laurie berkners voice. Maybe she should make a grown up cd.

One last thing-3 of my kids were naked almost constantly until they were at least 4 and they are now 14, 12, 12, and 8 (but the youngest hated to be naked) and are all amazing people so the commando thing is totally fine in my opinion.

    7. 8 months already ... goodness me,I feel old. Loved, loved, loved the pictures.

As for the maniac at the theatre, I have no idea how we can stop such horrendous tragedies. Have we become too tolerant, too forgiving? Certainly I think that's the case here in the UK.

I have to find out who Craig Ferguson is.

Finally I want to thank you for your lovely comments on my blog. They always give me a lift.

      Have a great weekend.

    9. Hey Shife ;-)
Glad to see Kyle and the little princess have your full attention and adoration. I can't believe it's been 8 months already. That means you're eight months older. That means I'm eight months older. GAH!

I thought it best to save my pro 2nd Amendment comments for another post on another day so I deleted my previous comment. This post doesn't seem to be the right place to hold that discussion. My prayers go out to the families of the people who lost their lives in those stupid senseless moments perpetrated by one deranged guy.

Anyway, have a good weekend and enjoy fatherhood. My nephew doesn't go commando but he does run around in his drawers. You can't keep clothes on that kid (he just turned four). Ah childhood. :-)

    10. Funny I just heard the Lumineers today. Some Saturdays as I slowly awake I turn on Jump Start and listen glad some songs still make sense. Glad some people do too.

    13. I think it is just life Mate. Just the way it is. The way it has always been. The way it always will be. Put it down to human frailty.
As for the kids and clothes. Allow them their naked freedom. They have the rest of their lives to be conformists.

    14. Craig Ferguson is funny don't catch him often though.

Likely story of why you take so long in the bathroom shife!

    15. totally with you on the assault weapons thing. i posted something like that on facebook, and i said how this dude should not be able to buy body armor and explosives and things, and then i forgot that i have some total nutters as friends.

i just took the post down and decided to never talk about serious stuff on there again.

i'm also tired of nuts killing people. enough already. we get it. you're nuts. just do harmless nutty things like making light bulbs light up while putting it in your mouth like uncle fester.

    16. Not with you and Dr.K on "assault weapons".
First, over the years I've watched the definition of assault weapons change. For decades it meant fully automatic, the definition has slowly been changed to include semi-auto.

I'm sure you've heard this before, the reason for the right to keep and bear arms has nothing to do with hunting or shooting at cans. It is so that the people stand a chance, albeit a small chance, to fight back against a government.

What if the gov made a law that your house and belongings are no longer yours? You and your family are out on the street.

I know, "they wouldn't do that." Would they put their hands down your pants at the airport? Will the TSA set up check points on the highway and THOROUGHLY search you and your loved ones? Sadly, it's in the works.

You may not believe that elements of the gov are capable of setting up false flag operations like 9-11 and probably Aurora.
But even if Aurora was legit, should that make the millions of law abiding AK-47 and AR-15 owners criminals?

Well, anyway, we disagree on one major issue, it doesn't really change my opinion that you are a nice guy and mean well. I know you don't spend a lot of time looking at negative things like I do and you probably shouldn't. If you mostly get your info from mainstream media, you are getting a very skewed picture of the world.

Look at it this way, you saw the aurora thing and want to ban assault weapons, let's say someone else saw it and wants to ban all semi-autos. Someone else saw it and wants us to give up all second amendment rights. Someone else saw it and is so scared, he wants to give up all constitutional rights.

Where do we draw the line? The people that are most afraid get to decide which rights we all give up?

I know this comment won't be popular but I had to get it off my chest. No hard feelings dude.
