Random Acts of Shifeness

  • So far so good with the little man. Mrs. Shife had to go to a business conference this week so me and Mania have been on our own for 2 nights now. I haven't been forced to drink myself silly and he hasn't tried to call child protective services but he does have them on speed dial.
  • No matter how you feel about our current President he did deliver a very moving speech yesterday in Tucson. I know every President is raked over the coals and their actions are thoroughly dissected especially in this day of the 24-hour news cycle, but deep down I firmly believe if Obama was white he would not have to defend himself so much. I don't agree with everything he does but I feel a lot of people can't get past the fact that a black man is in the White House. I know it is 2011 but I hate to tell you this but racism is still America's dirty little secret and it is out there. It reminds me of "A Time to Kill" when the lawyer tells the jury to close their eyes and listen to a story. After describing in slow and painful detail a horrible event, he then asks the jury, in his final comment, to "now imagine she's white."
  • Here is a pick-up line for all of you single fellas. If you use it I think you are guaranteed to have sex with your hand. Just tell the ladies she won a full-ride scholarship to orgasm college.
  • I had a surreal moment with Kyle last weekend. We rented a cabin and spent some time with Mrs. Shife's family so baby boy was sleeping in his pack-n-play all weekend. Well it was nap time so I put him down in his road bed, and went into the adjacent room until he fell asleep. A few minutes later Lil' Shife came strolling out of the room all by himself. He can now climb out of his pack-n-play and it definitely freaked me out because I am not ready for that quite yet.
  • I posted this on Facebook. The little man is going to town on pickles. Pretty much polished off a jar in 2 days. I can rule out that he is a pregnant woman with cravings, but does anybody have an idea why the little dude is a pickle addict?
  • So how are you doing?

  1. How's Elmo? Is he hooked on pickles too?

  2. Elmo is living large in Kyle's Toy Story fort. The only problem so far is that the Tankster sees the big, red, furry monster and his Mississippi leg hound kicks in so we might have to put a muzzle on Tank's junk. Thanks again Just Bob. Have a good weekend.

  4. I don't like Obama for a myriad of reasons none of which have to do with his skin color. Why? Because I'm a grown up (mostly). I didn't catch his Tuscon speech but then again I haven't caught much since we don't have cable so I'm Captain After-the-Fact since my news now comes from the net or the radio. Color me jaded but he may have just acquired a better speech writer and better pointers as to how to exude empathy ever since the Fort Hood shootings.

On a more personal note, kids love pickles and other extreme tastes. That's why super sour candy is so popular. Then at some point, possibly during college, they grow out of it then other goodies like Jaeger come into the picture (but hopefully not with Kyle). Buy stock in Vlasic my friend. You'll be a wealthy man or...kiddo will just continue being a happy camper ;-)

  5. I watched Obama giving his speech in Tucsan, it was very emotional. Don't worry about the pickles, Kyle will find a replacement when he's good and ready.

Now what's this about 'jumping straight to comments' ... Hmmm, too late, I've replaced The Long Walk with an account of my visit to NYC. Have a good week.

  6. My daughter loved pickles for a while too. Kids are funny. I bet the extreme/sour theory someone mentioned above is correct. Interesting because I never thought of that before.

Your son is completely adorable. What a great picture!

  8. my kids lived on pickles! no matter whether they were whole or sliced, so long as they were dill they ate them by the bowlfuls! I would buy the gallon plastic jars EVERY WEEK! That was their after school snacks! Still is and they are in their 20's!

BTW Baby Shife is adorable! And gets more so every day!

  9. i think people forget just how bad things were when obama took over. things would be a lot worse right now without tarp and the auto bailouts.

it's brave new world now that baby shife is mobile. i thought it would be so cool when my kids started walking. little did i know how much chasing i'd be doing.

  12. The thought of you freaking out about Kyle climbing out of his play and pack reminded me of the time I witnessed my nephew climb out of his crib. Definitely a freaky moment.

  13. My God, that boy could be on an ad for Baby GAP. He's gorgeous.

I think Jesus could come back and become President, perform miracles, and he'd get raked over the coals too. Anyone who gets that job is a target for criticism. But you're right about racism. It's in our DNA and we've got to breed it out.

Just wait until your little guy starts climbing up the kitchen counters or the refrigerator. It happens.
