So it begins

Sorry for the longer than usual absence but life just got a little suckier for this dumb, white guy. Right after I wrote my blog on Thursday expressing my love and admiration for Mrs. Shife I got laid off. It was sudden, unexpected, and I am still in shock. It was through no fault of my own as my position was eliminated thanks to economic crap bag that is still burning on America's front porch. Will someone please take one for the team and stomp that fire out? It is not looking good for my former employer as they have let go almost 80% of their employees since June. So I got to celebrate my wedding anniversary with my wife by wondering what the hell am I going to do with my life. (Suzanne the arrival of the book you sent me could not have come at a better time.)Also on your fourth year of wedded bliss the traditional gift is fruits or flowers so I told Mrs. Shife my former employer gave us a bowl of douche berries and a bouquet of eat shit for our anniversary.
Anyway I am little blue because this is the third major life event I have to deal with in less than three months. My mom died, a baby is on the way, and I don't have a job.
I know things will work out but it is hard seeing that picture develop right now when I am too busy having a pity party. So please cheer me up and send me good thoughts.
I will still be blogging but it might be hit and miss for a bit as I try to secure some sort of gainful employment in the immediate future. I guess I can start selling my underpants navy because I know that stuff works.

  2. If I could send you a set of boobs over the internet, I would (I mean, who doesn't like boobs?). Keep your head up bro. There always has to be a plot twist before you get to the happy ending (and not the massage parlor type).

  3. My thoughts are definitely with you, as I am still job searching myself.
I know things will work out for you two soon.

  4. Say man, don't let this get you down. Get to cracking on that resume and sell yourself like a cheap hooker! In the words of Rob Schneider from "The Waterboy" "You Can Do It!" I have not been reading your blog for very long but I am sorry to hear about your mom, I have been through the same thing. Oh and children are a blast, so that's cool.

If you don't mind moving and only one season a year (Summer) the Dallas market is in decent shape.

Oh and I love the way that topolk thinks! Boobies... yummy!

    Fuck!

Okay, now that I got that out of the way let me tell you something. I've been laid off FOUR TIMES! Yup...it doesn't get any easier either. The same dread, fear, and general anxiety are still there HOWEVER there is a silver lining...the more you get laid off the more people you pick up in your network.

My advice to you is NETWORK YOUR ASS OFF!! Anyone you've ever said, "Hello" to at work should be on your hit list. Tell them you are looking for a job and what skills you have and hound them endlessly until you get connected to someone who can potentially hire you. I'm telling you it works!!!

I'm thinking about you...I know it sucks now but things will get better. THEY WILL!!!!

  8. think big, go after a better job.

  9. Good Luck. I know you have to be pretty scared right now. The reason you are facing is exactly the reason I chose a field in healthcare. Because no matter how crappy our economy gets, there will always be germs that need to be identified a plan for killing them needs to be developed. So I am that woman. I will be sending good work vibes your way. Oh and I'll get that book in the mail soon too. Sorry it isn't in there yet, life has been a bit hectic on my end as well.

  10. I am so sorry.

I will send find a job vibes your direction.

That's one of the superawesome things about education: job security. That and summer off.

  11. I got laid off.

Well, it all depends on how you handle it my friend. I've been laid off, fired, and quite some jobs.

To me it was just all an adventure through life. But I do have many skills and have always gotten by just fine while still helping others along the way.

Maybe not in big ways, but in little ways. I always do a little something for others when around them.

Good luck with getting a new job, never had that problem myself, always had more job offers than I had time for.

These days I turn most of them down cuz I don't need the money, not that I ever did give a crap about money.

I don't recall what your trade is but if you need advice with a new trade that will get you by in these hard times let me know.

I could make a phone call and go to work tomorrow and work for four hours and make a hundred bucks. I just don't want to.

    Hang in there.

Angel Jr.... Praying is for retards. Getting off your ass and getting something done is what makes the world go around. Just saying.

  12. Oh, I forgot to say that if you need a little money to get you by to let me know. I get by on 881 bucks a month but I always have a little left over to share with others.

  13. That sucks. Here's hoping things work out soon.

    hi there,

yeah..some days eh? We bury, errr, scatter my granny this weekend. I got all set up with the DOL for unemployment...weeeee! But, I have your back, and if I have anything that lands on my plate, you are my first call for master of written words. Things really work out, and things change so that we can move on to our next big thing. The unknown is scary, but I guess Im a mistress of this now...its been my way ....though a lottery win could move me to a dimension I am dying to try...hehehe

  15. Oh, one more thing, IF!!! You make it to my age you will look back and understand that these days were just practice.

But I'm not taking any bets that you will get to my age. I wasn't taking any that I would get here. Wasn't even trying to in fact.

  16. Aww that sucks. I hope that you find something soon!!

  17. Shife sorry to hear this! Totally sending good thoughts, and hopefully a BIG Vandals win!

  18. Come to think of it, after reading your comment on Billy Pilgrims blog about bigger is better I take back my offer of help.

If you don't care about the planet why should I care about you? Good luck though.

  19. That's a serious bummer. Everyone around here will begin sweating bullets November 1st.

  20. After reading BBC am I now going to have to read Billy Pilgrams blog. SHIT! You know I love this planet and will have to kick your ass if you don't. WHAT???!!! Don't make me read something I don't want to read, then call me friend!!! WHAT???!!! I know I should, but I'm not going to read. Yes, it's self preservation. I love you and I'm willing to believe. Okay. Start now. (I just went to click the mouse to go to the next paragraph and clicked my cell phone instead. I'm still laughing. No, of course it didn't work.

Cece comment killed me because she's smart. Like Rob, she selected the perfect career. As a lawyer, he picked a criminal appellate career because he said "the more depressed the economy, the more business I get." Wow...he was right!!! Unfortunately he didn't factor in GWB, the last eight years and the collapse of fucking Wall Street because I'm down nearly $100,000 in the last few weeks (and that doesn't even count my house ~ and that's probably depreciated $100,000 as well!). My retirement's going to suck. What do I do with that? How do I make it all up at 49? These are very depressing times for a number of reasons for all of us. You still have time sweetie. You'll find a new job (trust me!), and the economy will improve, but for me, I don't have the luxury of time.

Hang in there. You know we're all pulling for you. And just so you're aware, how will people be able to tell Suz and Suz apart? Suzanne, knock it off ~ XO Suzanne No seriously, knock it off. This is my turf. Of course I'm laughing. No, it isn't my turf, but it was fun to say! I'm not even sure I know what "turf" means. Except, "Get off my Astro Dudette. Ouch."

I love you darling and hope the book helps in some small measure. It won't change your life, but the stories will make you think. Probably deeper than usual. Of course I'm laughing!!! I'm thinking on the level of Sarah Palin lately, so everything makes me laugh. Wink, wink.

    XO
I'll be back soon. Love you.

  21. Mr Shife I have the utmost faith in your job-getting abilities! Perhaps this is a good thing and will give you the opportunity to do something you've always wanted to, but couldn't.

As they say, when one door closes, another one opens!

Sending great thoughts and wishes your way! Oh and congrats on the little shifey-to-be!
