Thought of the day
Happy anniversary to my better half, Mrs. Shife. We will be celebrating #22 tomorrow.
She is awesome, and I am a lucky guy.
But it almost didn't work out, and here's why:
I slept with two dudes the night before I got married.
Man, it feels good to finally get that off my chest.
I’d pay good money to see your faces right now, or hear whatever just slipped out of your mouths.
Before anyone calls for an intervention, two quick disclaimers. First: Mrs. Shife knows. Second: the reality is vastly more innocent—and considerably more ridiculous—than it sounds.
Buckle up, friends. It’s storytime.
I spent my final night of bachelorhood at the University Inn in Moscow, Idaho.
Moscow is home to the University of Idaho, where I went to school and met the lovely Mrs. Shife. Since she grew up around there too, getting hitched in Moscow felt like the right way to kick off our life together.
Naturally, the night before the big day, I went out for a few drinks with my buddies at one of our old college haunts. But with the biggest day of my life looming, I played it smart. I called it an early night, walked back to the hotel, and hit the sack.
I need to emphasize one detail here: it was my room.
Single king bed. Just me, myself, and I.
At least, that was the working theory until sunrise.
I woke up locked in an involuntary cuddle sandwich. Flanked on both sides.
I didn't quite pull the full Steve Martin jump from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, but it was definitely less "those aren't pillows!" and more pure, unadulterated "What in the actual hell is happening?"
There is nothing quite like waking up in a haze, expecting peace and quiet, only to find yourself spooning two grown men.
Fortunately, once my eyes adjusted, I recognized them. That was a relief, seeing as I was reasonably confident I hadn't ordered "two dudes" off the late-night room service menu.
They were two of the buddies I’d been drinking with earlier.
The immediate mystery, of course, was how they got in. I had the only key.
Turns out, hotel front-desk security at 2:00 AM isn't exactly Fort Knox.
When the bar finally kicked them out, they stumbled into the hotel lobby. One of them slapped the counter, claimed he was me, slurred something about losing his key, and the clerk just handed one over. No ID. No questions asked.
I remain convinced the alcohol fumes rolling off them temporarily hypnotized the night clerk. Less of an Obi-Wan Kenobi Jedi mind trick, more Captain Jack Sparrow stumbling into sheer dumb luck.
They let themselves in, saw an open mattress, and made themselves comfortable.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how I slept with two dudes the night before my wedding.
Pretty scandalous, right?
Honestly, I think it might be a good luck charm. We’re staring down our 22nd anniversary, so whatever cosmic juju came out of that cuddle puddle, it clearly worked.
P.S. I originally wrote about this back in 2020, but a lot of you didn't even know me or this blog then, so I thought, let's share it again.
P.S.S. The traditional and modern symbol for a 22nd wedding anniversary is copper, but I am a man who throws tradition out the window and got Mrs. Shife new brake pads instead. Unfortunately, her car needed some work done, so Happy Anniversary!!
Meme dump
I will persevere.
I will keep moving forward.
I will keep moving forward.
I will be the stream.

Ha, drunk buddies without boundaries? Been there...been them too.
ReplyDeleteMost definitely.
DeleteWell, I for one was THRILLED that you were coming out as bisexual, but then I read on. Now I'm disappointed, DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED in you, young-man-that-was. But I'm a tolerant person so I won't hold your straightness against you.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first saw the "those aren't pillows" scene in "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" and the hilarious, defensive performance of butch behaviours that followed it, I laughed nonstop for at least 15 minutes. Oh, the genius comedic timing of Steve Martin and John Candy!
Oh I miss John Candy.
DeleteThank you for your understanding, Debra.
DeleteGreat story and great memes!! All I could see on that first one was a cow udder . There's bound to be a good caption that would go with my vision.
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary!! 22 is nothing to sneeze at!
That was me,. I didn't realize I was signed out of Blogger.
DeleteThank you, Kelly.
DeleteWow, that hotel's security really stank. They'd just give out a key to anyone claiming to be you, without asking for ID? Depending who it was, that could be dangerous. I hope they're more careful nowadays.
ReplyDeleteThe last thing we need is four of "the dong state", but I notice that map is in Italian, so maybe the US will be under new management by the time it happens?
I know people are upset about gas prices, but the odds are you ain't seen nothin' yet.
It was a different world, Infidel, and I am afraid you are right about the gas prices.
DeleteThis was hilarious! Makes me feel better about my pre-wedding day threesome with Balder half and a bridesmaid. My idea. Three nineteen-year-olds with raging hormones. Liquor was involved. Don't judge. Fifty-one years later we're still blissfully married and my bridesmaid joined the army and got a longtime girlfriend.
ReplyDeleteNew brake pads, huh? You old romantic. Happy anniversary you two.
You wildcat, Deedles, and thank you.
DeleteHappy Anniversary! Snuggling up with a couple friends is much different than surprise butt sex. Don't ask me how I know.
ReplyDeleteI will not, Ami. and thank you.
DeleteLOL, this story would make a hilarious movie scene too. Honesty is important to any relationship, so if you could tell Mrs. Shife about your friends mischief with you the night before your wedding, you're marriage is solid. Blessings to Mrs. Shife and you on your 22nd Wedding Anniversary!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Rev. Arnoldo.
DeleteHah! Happy Anniversary! 🥂
ReplyDeleteThank you, Paula.
DeleteI definitely can't top that one but I did have a somewhat similar experience. Only I woke up to find a half dressed lady on the floor. What is the best thing to do? I ended up just being quiet and letting her sleep a bit longer. Turns out she was just as confused as to why she ended up in my room, right next to her room. I learned to lock the door.
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary!
Thanks, Ed!
DeleteHappy anniversary! ✨✨✨✨✨
ReplyDeleteA who hasn’t ordered two dudes in college? I lost track of how many times I did that.
Also, Moscow, IDAHO???
XOXO
TY, SP!
DeleteHappy anniversary. I remember your post about getting married.
ReplyDeleteHappy Anniversary!!
ReplyDeleteI believe 22 Years is the Brake Pad Anniversary ...
You're such a tease. I thought that story was going an entirely different direction!!
Thanks, Bob.
DeletePretty sure that wouldn't happen now. Security is better, even in Iowa.
ReplyDeleteI would think so but don't sell Northern Idaho short. It is quite different up there.
DeleteWhoops! Of course I meant to say Idaho!
ReplyDeleteIdaho says no worries.
DeleteWell, you got that out of your system or you didn't. We'll never know.
ReplyDeleteOnly time will tell, Ruby.
DeleteHappy 22nd anniversary to you both! That "cuddle sandwich" reveal is a genuinely great slow-build story, and new brake pads over copper is the most married-couple gift choice imaginable.
ReplyDeleteGreetz, Diana

Thank you, Diana.
DeleteThat's a funny story, but I can thankfully NOT relate to it. Happy Anniversary! Brake pads are a very romantic choice. I hope it includes dinner!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Bijoux.
DeleteThat's a funny story. Happy anniversary.
ReplyDeleteTY, MK!
DeleteCongratulation, and many more.
ReplyDeleteThanks, peppylady.
DeleteHappy Anniversary, you two! May you get to 22 more.....which is where me and my honey are at.
ReplyDeleteThat last meme was me yesterday, when I had to fill up and it was over $50. wah
Thank you.
DeleteHappy Anniversary. Might I suggest adding some chocolates and a bouquet of flowers to the gift list. It might make up for the former indiscretion..
ReplyDeleteExcellent suggestion, Lisa, and thank you.
DeleteLol. This story would have been much more entertaining if you had no clue who the two guys were. Just remember this for next tume.
ReplyDeleteI'm saving that story for later. 😁
Delete*time
ReplyDeleteTume or time. It all works, Debby.
DeleteCute story. Just so you know, for centuries men slept together...without sex. There's nothing wrong with it. Christianity made it sound dirty.
ReplyDeleteSounds about on par for Christianity.
