Thought of the day

I was listening to Pearl Jam during a gym workout, trying to decipher some of the lyrics Eddie Vedder was mumbling, and I wondered: if you exposed a young child to the wonderful world of Pearl Jam, would they end up in speech therapy full-time?

Their first words might sound less like "mama" and more like a passionate, deeply vibrato "Maaaa-muhhhh-uhhh."

Consonants would be entirely optional. Every request would be delivered in a wide-open grunge posture—knees slightly bent, chin tucked, staring intensely at the middle distance—and every sentence would close out with a guttural, triumphant exclamation.
Examples might include:
  • "I want a snack" translates to "Hun-gah-rayyyy... feee-ling the empty insiiide-uh, yeeeeah!"
  • "I don’t want to go to bed" might be "Sheets are caaawling... but I’m still aliiiiive-uh!"
  • "Pick me up" equals "Take me to higher grouuund... lift-a this weary booody, yeeeah-heh!"
A quick search online reassured me that I am not the only one who isn't sure what Eddie Vedder is saying:

"Even Flow"
What people hear: "Rest his head on a pillow made of cornflakes"
The actual lyric: "Rest his head on a pillow made of concrete"

"Corduroy"
What people hear: "Everything has changed, absolutely nothing's changed"
The actual lyric: "Everything has chains, absolutely nothing's changed"
What people hear: "Take my hand, not my picture, spilled my teacher"
The actual lyric: "Take my hand, not my picture, spilled my tincture"

"Rats"
What people hear: "Lick the dirt off Olajuwon's feet" (referencing NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon)
The actual lyric: "Ben, the two of us need look no more" (a direct nod to Michael Jackson's song Ben, which is about a pet rat)

"Rearviewmirror"
What people hear: "Radio clown pissed on my plate"
The actual lyric: "Saw things clearer, once you, were in my rearviewmirror"

"Yellow Ledbetter"
What people hear: "I said I know what I wear, is it a boxer or a bag?"
The actual lyric: "I said, 'I don't know whether I'm the boxer or the bag'"
What people hear: "Anna Nicole's mama said I don't wanna see Anna fall down again"
The actual lyric: "And I know, and I know, I don't want to see them go"

No Meme dump

Last week, commenting was the issue, and this week Google isn't letting me upload photos so no memes this week. Is anyone else having issues with images?

I will persevere.
I will keep moving forward.
I will be the stream.

  1. I'm of the vinyl generation and it was always a thrill when the lyrics to the songs were included on the inside sleeve. Of course now we have the internet to tell us the correct words, if the internet is to be believed. It (or AI) might be too busy plotting our demise.

  2. LOL! Although I attended a couple of Hard Rock events with friends during my college days, I've never been a fan of that genre of music. I like to listen to soft rock, traditional pop, R&B, New wave, and traditional Mexican music. Of course, I also listen to a variety of genres of Christian music, including traditional, gospel, blue grass, Taizé, and contemporary. Peace, my friend!

  3. A couple of people have mentioned having problems with uploading pictures, but I thought it was fixed now. I haven't posted since Tuesday, so I haven't had a chance to test it myself.

  4. Pearl Jam was just enough after my time that I didn't know much of their catalogue. I agree with Kelly about provided lyrics.

  5. I've given up on understanding lyrics and if I sing along, I'm usually miles off from the actual words. I haven't had issues with photos on WordPress but I did have trouble commenting on Blogger sites when I first returned from Ireland. I'm blaming everything on jet lag.

We used to do this all the time!
I have friends that only recently discovered what Prince sings in Raspberry Beret!

  10. All I can say is what Elton used to sing:
    "Hold me closer Tony Danza."

  11. I never listened to Pearl Jam, mainly because I had no idea what they were saying nor cared. But Men at Work definitely said, "He just smiled and gave me a bit of his sandwich", in their song Down Under. Manfred Mann also said, "Wrapped like up like a douche into the rotor in the night" due to the "boner on the shoulder".

  12. Thank goodness I blog ahead and had some posts with the pictures already added because I can't upload any pictures right now to a new or old blog post. Hope they get these glitches fixed soon.

  13. And once you get the wrong one in your head, you cannot sing it right. I still sing "possum brown for parson brown. Every. Single. Time.

  15. I couldn't post comments. Then I couldn't upload pictures. Now my reading feed isn't updating. I have to go to Manage and click through the blogs I follow to see what anyone is posting. I hope this isn't a foreboding of bad tidings from Blogger about their commitment to this project after all these years.

  16. Misheard lyrics are always fun! I was never a Pearl Jam fan, but Eddie does a nice cover of The English Beat's 'Save It For Later.' The only issue I'm having with Blogger is that my feed reader will not update. I've been stuck with the same posts from 4 days ago. It's been giving me issues all summer. I have to just go to each person's blog now to see if they've written a new post. I can count on you for Thursdays!
