Thought of the day


April is done.
Thirty days, thirty posts and I’m still standing.

I’ve decided my victory lap involves zero festivities and maximum napping.
But here is my dirty little secret: I cannot nap in silence.
If I don't have a podcast, music or some random background noise playing, my brain starts conducting an audit.
And my internal auditor is such a dick.


It starts reviewing my mistakes, brainstorming future catastrophes and generally spiking my anxiety. I’ve realized I need what I call an "auditory security blanket." It’s just enough background noise to occupy the brain with "non-threatening info," so the internal monologue stays muted.

It’s the only way I can get some peace.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with a nap and a very boring podcast about the history of PowerPoint presentations.

How do you keep the internal auditor quiet?
Do you need a soundtrack to snooze, or are you a fan of the silence?
Or do you find naps unnecessary?

  1. I've never needed a nap unless I've been really sick. But staying asleep at night has always been a challenge for me. I've had some success with cognitive shuffling (google can explain it better than me).

  2. Coffee plus a diuretic, I would definitely help that coffee shop with its TP collection. Congrats on finishing the month, Matt! I like silence while sleeping and don't nap, so I'm not sure about that.

  3. My naps are always involuntary. I turn on the YouTubes and sit in my comfy ejector chair for some nice reddit revenge stories. I wake up twenty minutes later to a different story or a Voiceplay video. Rinse and repeat. I seem to have turned into my beloved late mother-in-law.

  4. Interestingly enough, unless I am really in a fuss about something. I can usually shut myself off. Mentally just stop thought. It is hard to explain. But I think it is a form of self hypnosis, something I taught myself as a kid, actally.

  5. Like Deedles, my naps usually happen without my permission (though I would never deny one). I like quiet, though in reality, it's never truly quiet... even in a power outage (especially so at my house since we have a generator).

    I love some white noise to fall asleep. I actually got a white noise machine from a friend (he’s a psychologist and they use them outside their office) and I love it. In the summer, I use an old fashioned fan to lull me to sleep.

  7. I don't nap, I barely sleep. I get maybe 4-5 hours of sleep at night. Mostly pain keeps me awake.

  8. I can't nap. I can sleep for several hours midday but I cannot nap!!
    But I need silence to fall asleep or else the voices in my head start a band and go on tour for eight hours straight!

  11. Hahahahaha, dragons! Congrats on achieving your daily blogging goal for April! I can't fall asleep with background noise unless I'm exhausted, so generally I need it to be quiet. But if anxiety keeps my mind (over)working, I find that focusing on a repetitive, boring rhyme (like "Mary has a little lamb" over and over) will often put me to sleep.

    1. I have been doing something similar with song titles. I pick a letter in the alphabet and come up with some songs by bands or solo artists.
