Thought of the day
It also made me revisit a blog of my past and some of the other movie scenes that can make you squirm in your seat, cover your eyes and yell, "FOR THE LOVE OF THE FATTEST BASSETS, PLEASE MAKE IT STOP."
Here are 10 of the absolute worst—in no particular order—and remember, this is purely from a "dumb, white guy’s" perspective.
Warning: Many of these clips contain extremely gratuitous violence. Watch at your own risk.
American History X – The Curb Stomp: A gruesome, stomach-turning scene where Edward Norton’s character forces a man to bite the curb before stomping him. It’s the sound that stays with you.
Watch the Scene Misery – Hobbling Paul Sheldon: Annie Wilkes taking a sledgehammer to Paul’s ankles is the definition of "cringe-worthy." It’s the ultimate "please look away" moment.
Watch the Scene Casino – The Cornfield Beatdown: Joe Pesci and his brother are getting beaten with baseball bats and buried alive while still breathing. It’s relentless and deeply graphic.
Watch the Scene There’s Something About Mary – The Zipper: Probably the most famous zipper accident in cinematic history. "Frank and beans!" It’s funny, sure, but for any guy watching, it’s pure horror.
Watch the Scene Pulp Fiction – The Basement: Marcellus Wallace’s nightmare in the basement of the pawn shop. Thankfully, he "gets medieval" on them shortly after, but getting to that point is a tough ride.
Watch the Scene Casino Royale – The Chair Torture: 007 being hit in the "crown jewels" with a knotted rope. I find myself grabbing my own junk for comfort every time this plays.
Watch the Scene Deliverance – "Squeal Like a Pig": This scene is why I will never, ever take a canoe trip in Georgia. It remains one of the most disturbing moments in film.
Watch the Scene Reservoir Dogs – The Ear Slice: Set to the upbeat "Stuck in the Middle with You," this scene is unnerving because it makes casual torture feel almost... rhythmic.
Watch the Scene 127 Hours – The Arm Amputation: You know it’s coming for the entire movie, but nothing prepares you for the sound of the nerve snapping when he finally breaks free.
Watch the Scene Syriana – The Fingernails: George Clooney getting his fingernails removed with pliers. It’s slow, it’s deliberate, and it’s just frickin’ horrible.
Watch the Scene
Talk to you tomorrow.
I will persevere.
I will keep moving forward.

Nothing can be worse than the photo I just got in an email (without warning) of a friend's knee that split open after a fall following two botched knee-replacement surgeries.
ReplyDeleteLove Deliverance. Both the book and the movie.
Yikes!!
DeleteOMG
ReplyDeleteThe Deliverance scene is terrifying. The Casino Royale one was PAINFUL to watch. Maybe cause I’m a dude and cannot imagine how that would feel.
Gratuitous horror. Yep.
XOXO
I think dudes find Casino Royale way more difficult.
DeleteMany of these I have seen and none of them will I watch again. Oy! Even the one that aren't visually graphic are aurally graphic and that's almost worse!
ReplyDeleteI have no motivation to revisit any of them.
DeleteThe execution of Del (Michael Jeter) in The Green Mile. I can almost smell the burning flesh. Of the movies that you've listed, I have only seen Misery and Casino Royale. Once was enough and I have no desire to even watch a clip of the others here.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about that one and that is a tough watch.
DeleteI'm glad I've only seen #4 and 5 in your list. They all sound awful! I hope your week improves.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Bijoux.
DeleteThe Human Centipede
ReplyDeleteI’m not going to link it though.
Never saw it but I am well aware.
DeleteFunny most of these I've never seen or only seen parts of like the disgusting scene in Deliverance. I'm a wussy white girl who likes When Harry Met Sally or Wedding Crashers. LOL
ReplyDeleteSounds like a better plan.
DeleteI haven't seen any of your clips (by choice!)
ReplyDeleteSmart choice.
DeleteI've only seen "Deliverance" and that was enough. I would say that "Saving Private Ryan" is one of the most graphic and disturbing films I've seen--especially the first 15 minutes or so. Sorry that your Monday has been so hellish!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Margaret.
DeleteSorry about your Monday.
ReplyDeleteI have a low threshold for awfulness like that. Tim watches a lot of it. I have to tell you that Misery actually made me sick. The idea of being helpless and at the mercy of a sadist was too much. The most important ugly movie I ever saw was And They Shall Not Grow Old. It is the only time I have been at the movies, that when the movie ended and the lights came on, people stood up and exited in complete silence.
Thanks, Debby! My threshold is definitely not as high as it used to be and I think having kiddos most certainly changed my perspective.
