Quincy survived

After the smoke cleared, the husky basset hound from the mean streets of Canyon County managed to survive the in-law invasion. He had a couple of fights with Kirby, Sarah's Mom and Dad's dog, and he endured the poking and prodding from the three babies. He almost seemed kind of sad when Molly and Jody left with the kids so maybe he liked them more than he let on. But when he finally did get the house back to himself, he joined Sarah and I on the couch and snuggled between us as we all took a well-deserved nap.

Doggie Prozac

We have to give Quincy some calming pills this weekend because the in-laws are coming to town. There will be about 12 people staying at our house and Quincy gets a little crazy when unfamiliar people come over. He has met them all before but unless you have taken him for a stroll he is not your pal and acts like a 2-year-old on a Cocoa Puffs high. So to make a long story short we give him some of these natural remedies that are suppose to help him be cool when the guests are over. Personally I think he is going to start smoking and drinking, but we will give the pills a shot and hope for the best.

Quincy and his Greenies

Quincy has a new passion right now. He loves these things called Greenies. I just started buying them for him about a month ago, and the dog goes absolutely ape shit when I give him one. Quincy's other passion is human food, but I could be wearing pork chop underwear and a cheese suit and he wouldn't give me the time of day if he had a Greenie.

Quincy and his DINKs

Sarah and I were referred to the other day by her business partner as DINKs -- double income with no kids. According to them we spend a lot of money on the dog because he is our baby. I consider Quincy more of my buddy who has no vocational skills or training with really bad breath. But we do spend a lot of cash on the dog; he has 8 collars for goodness sake. But he is worth it. He is actually a pretty cool dog and he makes our lives a little more exciting and happier.

Quincy's theme song

Every dog needs a theme song, and there are of course obvious ones for Quincy like Elvis Presley's "Ain't Nothing but a Hound Dog." But Quincy needs something a little edgier and heavier. A song that speaks to his heart and tells people what makes him tick. So after much debate, I am proud to announce to the world that Quincy's theme song is "Lick it Up" by KISS.
Here's a link to a sample of the song in case you haven't heard it.

I know the song is about sex, but for Quincy it is about his love affair with food and the dinner plates he gets to clean up.

Quincy and the garbage cans

For the last week or so, Quincy has made it his personal mission to tear the garbage cans in the house new buttholes. He goes into the office or one of the bedrooms and has a battle royale with the trash, and Sarah and I yell at him. He pretends to care and tells us he is sorry, and then he does it again the following day. Good times.

Dr. Quincy

The Basset has been busy the last few days because one of his owners has been home sick so he hasn't had time to blog. He has been cuddling and napping and giving plenty of TLC to help make his precious owner feel better.

And evidently I am going to have to put some porn on here to get some feedback because drunk animal photos aren't doing it.

Wild and Crazy Quincy

He is out of control again. Sarah and I came home to find our beloved basset passed out again. He has been knocking back the sauce like a madman ever since Princess left him for a slimmer, younger basset that she met online. The poor guy is just heartbroken. Here is the link: http://www.heartsfield.com/image/Drunk-Dog.jpg

I am hoping posting some silly photos will imspire people to write something on my blog because right now I ain't getting any love. This is a funny photo so it has to inspire someone.

Duke still sucks

Quincy abandoned me halfway through the Duke/UNC game so I should have known that the Heels were going to lose. The Basset seems to have sixth sense when it comes to sporting events and when he knows one of my teams is going to lose he high tails it to the bedroom and buries himself under a mountain of pillows and blankets. Where is the love, Quincy?

Quincy the bed hog

Quincy dog can be awfully finicky in the bed, and he is under the impression that he must be in between Sarah and myself with a no-feet zone of about 12 inches. So Sarah and I are on the edges of the king bed while our plump pooch sprawls out like a beached manatee in the middle.
I have tried to explain to him that this is the biggest bed we can buy; we are out of options. I have also pointed out to him that he can actually curl up in a bar, and that is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to Sarah and I stretched out to the fullest extent possible.

Yeast infection

Apparently Quincy picked up a yeast infection on one of his wild nights out on the town. The vet gave us some ear drops but the pooch is not happy about me putting those in his ears. I think he would bite my nuts if he had the chance. I fully expect to find a load of his crap in my shoes or something since he is not happy with me.

Quincy and the Super Bowl

The day after the Super Bowl is a day most people spend slowly recovering from the excess drinking and gorging at parties throughout the land. But for me it is a special day because the day after the Super Bowl 5 years ago I adopted Quincy. Sarah and I found him at the Canyon Counter Humane Society in Nampa and it was love at first sight. He was a pathetic looking dog, weighing only about 30 pounds and he couldn't get around much because he had the hershey squirts. He was also a little skittish because of the barking and just laid on his pillow looking very sad. We coerced him into taking a walk outside and while he was running around with Sarah our cell phone fell out of her coat and shattered into pieces. So Mr. Quincy, our future dog, already cost us $75 and we didn't even own him yet. We met him on Saturday, adopted him on Monday and have loved him every day since.

Dentist recap

Well, poor Quincy had to spend 12 hours at the vet yesterday waiting to get his teeth cleaned. They had a couple of emergencies during the day so the fat basset moved down on the food chain. He only weighs 52.7 pounds so he is losing some of his plumpness. Just 3 more pounds to go until he is calendar model ready.
I got Quincy home about 7:30 and the vet said he shouldn't have anything to eat or drink until 9. Well the poor guy had gone without both for 20 hours so he wasn't pretty thirsty and hungry. I put away his dishes when we got home and got a sad look from the big fella. I felt bad but I was determined to follow the vet's instructions. As I was putting clothes away in the bedroom the plump one was nowhere to be found. I gave him a shout out but still nothing. Then I could hear in the distance the sound of water being lapped up at a furious pace. I rushed out only to find my beloved dog's head buried in porcelain enjoying the smooth, refreshing toilet water. Quincy never, ever drinks out the toilet so I knew he was parched, so I said to hell with the instructions and gave him his water and food.

Quotations from Quincy

"One can easily judge the characters of others by how they treat those who they think can do nothing for them."

Hello, it's me Quincy. I have to go get my teeth cleaned today so I am taking a break from blogging.

Mr. and Mrs. Shifley with our pleasantly plump Basset Hound, Quincy.

Groundhog's Day

I think we need to replace Punxsutawney Phil with Quincy. If he wakes up in the morning and licks his junk, then we have 6 more weeks of winter. Just a thought.

Basset Revenge

I finally broke down and made a dentist appointment after much nagging from my wife and mother. It has been about 8 years since I made the trip to the chair. Anyway, the dentist that was recommended to me was booked until the end of March so I had nothing to worry about for awhile. I also scheduled Quincy to get his teeth cleaned, and he has to go the vet Thursday.
I was making fun of him this weekend, and not being very nice as Sarah would say. Well, apparently the pleasantly plump Basset has some connections because I got a phone call Monday telling me I can see the dentist on Thursday. So the lesson to be learned here is that Basset Hounds must be the patron saints of dentists. You have been warned.
